Forums - Nintendo Discussion - People label "casual" for almost any wii release?

'Shovelware' is also a good label, and so is 'cheap cash in', also known as remake in some circles.

If you're talking about Animal Crossing you're not only trolling but totally insane.  If you're not talking about Animal Crossing, I guess you're just trolling.

Phasers are better than disrupters and I don't know what the hell you're talking about.

Edit: lulz, I just read the thread title. I was just suggesting other names that people apply to Wii titles. So reading the OP its about Animal Crossing huh? I guess I should skim less and read more.

Pretty pictures make it all better, yes?

Actually most people get confused by the terms "hardcore game" and "casual game", because nobody was ever able to clearly define what they mean. The reason is that these terms don't make any sense in the first place, that's why people are struggling to define them. "Hardcore" and "casual" can be used to describe the amount of time invested by the player in games, but they can't and shouldn't be used to describe games themselves.

You can clearly see it once again in this thread, it's impossible to define what a "hardcore game" and what a "casual game" is, because no matter how you try to do it, if you try to apply these definitions to all games, there are many cases in which they don't seem to fit. Then you are left with a lot exceptions and have to add additional rules to your definitions which in return brings in other games which can't be clearly categorized now.

In short, there's no such thing as a "hardcore game" and a "casual game".

You can choose to remove that term from your lexicon but the term exists and the definitions people use are pretty apparent. People get confused because they mistake hardcore/casual games with hardcore/casual gamers. You already know how I defined the terms, notwithstanding my own personal disagreement with the definition I outlined, it is in the consensus. Even though im sure you dont necessarily mean to do it, you make the clasical mistake in describing hardcore vs casual as you said "amount of time invested by a player in games". That merely describes the gamer. The amount in time playing a game isn't even in my definition of hardcore/casual game, its the amount of effort. Huge difference. The amount of time playing games is what defines a hardcore vs casual gamer.

Okay, if the terms "hardcore game" and "casual game" really exist, post a link to their dictionary entry or something equivalent. Otherwise I'll continue to believe that these are made up terms with made up definitions.

Rol... seriously.  Terms are created and defined in society before they are entered into dictionaries.  If you want to deny the terms hardcore/casual games are you also going to deny their definitions? I could easily just swap casual game with a 'game that appeals to casual gamers, is easy to play, doesn't require much effort.'

So instead of saying the Wii has many casual games I could say Nintendo has many games that appeal to casual gamers, are easy to play, and do not require much effort.

A warrior keeps death on the mind from the moment of their first breath to the moment of their last.

actually animal crossing is for casual and hardcore gamers - you can play it casually few minutes per day just for fun and you can get up at 5 o'clock to go fishing in the mornin in AC.

The word "hardcore" is a pornographic term.  Considering I'm the only member here who has posed nude with Game Boys and uploaded the photographic evidence to the internet, I would be the only "hardcore gamer" here.  And I love Animal Crossing.

You think somebody can play Tetris for 100 hours and still be casual because the game has casual appeal?  How does the casual appeal affect the fact that they just dumped 100 hours of their life into it?  Is it actually possible to just casually dump 100 hours of your life into something?

Besides, casual sex and hardcore sex are not opposites at all.  Sex can be both or neither as well.  Games are the same.  If you insist on using pornographic terminology to categorize video games, you should at least keep the definitions.

A dictionary takes time for people to add words into and takes a massive amount of people to use it. So, here we are go. While not credible site it is the closes we have to a dictionary that actually documents definitions of slang such as Hardcore game.

By that definition. Animal Crossing fits under the time management. It does not fit under effort. It takes no skill to play and easy to master.

I have work tomorrow at 9am and its 4:17 am where i am. Stayed up longer then expected, having girl trouble....we will probably continue this tomorrow morning.

So what you're saying is that playing tetris in the nude is hardcore, but doing it with clothes on is casual?

Are there degrees of hardcareness? Like playing tetris while banging a prostitute is that more hardcore than doing it whilst masturbating?

By that definition Mario Kart Wii is a hardcore game, I think that will offend some people.

gah.....one last post then before i turn in. Once again. No effort. Anyone can play it without really getting frustrated. It's a pick up and play game. It's one of those games that appeal to both though cause no matter how you look at it. Mario Kart is fun.  Super Mario Kart was one of my first games, I mastered it at the age of 4 or 5. I started on the nes, but snes was already out, i just didn't have one. Thank you birthday at burgerking :P

People have a tendancy to label things. Don't let these people dictate your beliefs and opinions.

My fiance might break up with me....so im staying on much longer then intended :( im going to die at work

OP: Yes i am saying that. My granda plays 1,000s upon thousands hours of tetris, and a website called Pogo. I still consider her a casual gamer and those games casual games. She wouldn't even begin to understand how to play an RPG, or something non puzzle related. Just because you played a game 1,000 hours doesn't make the game hardcore or the player. The player must be skilled at multiple game genres, and be able and willing to accept new ideas for games.  It requires time and actuall effort. Time is not a factor alone. Otherwise we could be playing a hardcore game of duck, duck, goose right now.

just because a game is casual does not render it a bad game. It just means it's a game that many people can play right from the get go and doesn't really push the player in terms of difficulty or mastery. I played animal crossing on my gamecube. While i didn't dump hours into i thought it was an alright game just not my cup of tea. (what I do have a problem when a companies main focus is casual games)

Edits: realized i forgot half my post.

It's all dependant on the interpretation.

In my opinion 95% of VGcharts members are casual gamers - because my interpretation of the hardcore gamer is a gamer who starts playing a challenging game, and is playing it intensively a certain amount of time, not just finishing it several times, but also mastering it and taking himself to the competitive level.

Students who get together and play PES on their X360's and PS3's, and when they're alone fire up MGS4 or some other "hardcore" title, because it's not for kiddies. Infact, a lot of "hardcore" games are WAY easier to MASTER than some of "casual" games.
