It's all dependant on the interpretation.
In my opinion 95% of VGcharts members are casual gamers - because my interpretation of the hardcore gamer is a gamer who starts playing a challenging game, and is playing it intensively a certain amount of time, not just finishing it several times, but also mastering it and taking himself to the competitive level.
Students who get together and play PES on their X360's and PS3's, and when they're alone fire up MGS4 or some other "hardcore" title, because it's not for kiddies. Infact, a lot of "hardcore" games are WAY easier to MASTER than some of "casual" games.
