Forums - Gaming - Realism and games, why you should expect always expect less.

Hello all, for once I'v decided not to make a another sarcasm thread due to Mods showing me, them, shaking there fists at me.  As well to create new content honestly takes effort, oh course I could be like Rol and just reword someones else's and put a sarcasm twist on it.........meh.

But one thing I like to do is rant.  Ranting is fun. Now a subject that I keep reading up on in the advancement of gaming (no its not immersion)  but realism in games.

Now realism I can say is most likely the biggest waste of time and energy for game developers.  Yes I can see the PC gamers, PS3 and 360 fans rise in a wave of boos and hissing only to sit back down from exhaustion but let me state my case.

1- Animation will never, ever be on par with real people.  Real people develop all different kinds of walks in different situations, body language, dancing, even small traits, yes some of these have being done, but all on ONE game model?  Oh course not.

2- AI will never be that far.  Lord of the Rings tried this out, all the CGI trolls and orcs were put into a realistic situation to see for fun how well it would work,  most of them bailed out.   Not much fun for the gamer is it now when the AI might even not to bother to show up and rather play with its kids.

3- No console will have the power to render that much.  Many people try to say we are close to pixars work.  Bull.  Shit.

Pixar have a whole WAREHOUSE full of the latest PC's just to RENDER there characters.  Which bring sup the last point.

4- The budget will eventually crush the developers.  Over 200 million dollars alone is the minimum for films from Pixar to use the latest and most realistic looking graphics.  They get mulitple income from disney, merchandise, cinema sales, DVD's.  The game industry, not so much.

5- Once you make a game realistic it can also take away the fun.  Seriously, ever consider what would happen in Soul Calibar if your swords cut like in real life?

Round 1 FIGHT, DEATH!

Or GTA if Police were like real police if a bank robber walked out in broad daylight with no hostage and the protection of a ski mask?  Sniper bullet, head, end.

We have to relise, these are just games, toys in fact.  Sure there limited to real life but our own imagination expands from it and thus makes it immersive.  The game industry already has a lot of different genres, and graphical persepectives but if it reaches towards realism its basically reaching into its own financial demise.  Because the industry now its trying to be financially successful in, isn't making you money, then theres a issue.

I think GTA was bad example. It's one of the games that would be much funner if it were realistic. You would have to do so much more, and there would be so much more to do.

It would be way way better. I've always wanted a realistic swordfighting game.

A realistic swordfighting game is way beyond current game controllers ability.  The closest thing I have found to a realistic swordfighting game is take two bokkens (wooden katana) and you and a friend beat the shit out of each other.  Last one not unconscience or dead wins.

A realistic swordfight would be amazing. Perhaps if Wii Motion+ or the like keep improving...
And come on, never say never. Lets not forget that forty years ago produce 1 GFLOP costed like 1 trillion dollars. Five years ago was US$ 640. And now is less than half a dollar. Budget-wise things may not get better, but things like that will never be hardware constrained for much time.

I agree about GTA. This game couldn't ever be realistic. In real life, if you ran over more than 3 people, your wanted level would be 6 easily. Also, everytime you have a car crash your character would either die or become quadriplegic. That would be soooo fun!

How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

The gaming rules don't have to match the real world. Future gaming worlds will still have stupid rules like running around with 5 knife stabs en 2 bullets in your head. Anyway it's more fun to play this way. Although realistic games will still be around, I assume RB6 Soccom CSS players would love these realistic rules.

As for realism in terms of graphics
They will never be like real world in theory. I do believe that artists are on their way to fool our eyes. This will be accomplished within 10 years. Realistic physics are a lot harder even this generation they are plain simpel, compared to our world.

BTW building your own games=hardcore
