Forums - Sales Discussion - Whats the biggest lead the 360 has had over the PS3?

None of the chartz seem to be helping me find this out.

A little over 7 million, have a look from the time period before the holiday season 07 (When the Xbox 360 was still outselling the PS3). If the Xbox 360 leads the PS3 by about 400k this year you'd say that it was at the largest gap ever in the history of this generation. (400k IIRC was the amount the PS3 outsold the 360 over the last holiday season)

Tease.

Day before PS3 launched?

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

You'd think so, but no. The 360 was outselling the PS3 for just under a year, so I would say a week before the PS3 price cut, whenever that was.

Squilliam's probably right, around 7 million.

Be interesting to find out the actual true number for this. Because after 2008 ends and we get through the first 2-3 months of 09 if things stay as they are then you would expect the gap to be above 7m mark as it is only 300k away from that now. If indeed that does happen then even the most supportive PS3 person must admit it will be very tough to not only stop the gap increasing but to overtake it.

You shouldn't underestimate the devotion of some fans...

Besides, sales are cyclical...  eventually the PS3 will gain some momentum and regardless of how big or small that momentum is you'll see the exact threads we have today about the PS3 being doomed, repeated for the 360.

I think its 7.14mil, or something.

There is no doubt that the gap will diminish in the long and PS3 still has the chance to pass the 360 in the long run (2010 as earliest). There are two important points to look at here,

a) Is 360 persistently outselling PS3 by cumulative sales from the launch on a weekly basis? NO

The green line (360) is NOT above the red line!

b) Does PS3 still have incredible exclusives? YES

As long as the answers are 1)No, and 2)Yes, PS3 is far from being doomed.

But the PS3's top exclusives have already gone to the 360 and the general view from gamers is that the 360 is the PS2 of this generation in terms of software.  It's the gamers' console.

The PS3 closing the gap by the end of 2010 at this point looks extremely unlikely.  Sony first needs to reverse the trend of the 360 outselling them every year, then they can look at outselling the 360 by 7 million units.

Its not about the PS3 being doomed far from it. It is about the console being it's third year and being the furthest behind the 360 then it has ever been. If that number is reached then that is symbolic as would mean since the PS3 has been on release it has not made any gains on the 360.

The PS3 is not doomed, it just looks more and more likely it will be 3rd this generation. If the 360 stopped selling and the PS3 made back 1m a year it would take 7 years to just catch the 360. In 7 years time i think we can safely say we will be talking and maybe playing the next batch of consoles.
