Forums - Sales Discussion - only 8 percent of holiday buyers were considering the upgrade to a Blu-ray

Another MS fanboy has found a biased article about BluRay. Surprise, Surprise.

In my town, all the news reports from Black Friday were "HDTV's, BR and all tree consoles were the hot items that everyone was buying." Seems to contradict that article a little.

I was thinking about getting a blu ray player on Black Friday, but decided to wait until they get much cheaper.

Why would you think that the authour is an Microsoft owner? That makes no sense really, as Microsoft is small in the movie buisness.

That is VGChartz LONGEST review. And it's NOT Cute Kitten DS

After hearing how Blu Ray players were a very hot item this Black Friday and with many people claiming stores are very low on inventory or even sold out, why would anyone post an article from before that date?

A pre-Black Friday article is pretty irrelevant at this point.

Also for those worried about prices, Walmart already has discounted BD movies for $9.99-$14.99. New movies starting at $19.99.

These stats have nothing to do with being a MS fanboy, so suggesting it is wrong. I'm a early adopter of BR, had it from the start (and HDDVD) It is a fact that BR has a slower adoption then the studios thought it would once HDDVD stopped. Prices of stand alone players has been a big problem, as well as the prices of discs in retail stores. The BR sales the last few days will help the cause, but they need to come down across the board system, and disc wise to all major retail outlets. Seeing a Fox/Sony movie sell for $35 at BB yesterday, made me happy I shop at amazon for all my movies.

Blu-ray Sparks ‘Energetic’ Black Friday

Deep discounts on Blu-ray players and movies coupled with traditional demand for DVDs during the holidays contributed to a 17% increase in the number of shoppers hitting stores on Black Friday through Nov. 30, according to a survey released by the National Retail Federation.

The Washington, D.C.-based trade group said 172 million shoppers visited stores and related online sites spending $41 billion beginning the day after Thanksgiving through the weekend compared to 147 million shoppers last year.
Shoppers spent about $372.57 over the weekend (including Thanksgiving Day), up 7.2% from $347.55 spent during the previous year period. The NRF projects 2008 holiday sales will increase 2.2% to $470.4 billion.
Top selling items included flat screen high-definition televisions, GPS systems, digital frames and cameras, video game systems and Blu-ray players. About 39% of shoppers bought DVDs, CDs and video games, while nearly 36% bought consumer electronics and 28.5% bought toys.
Interestingly, gift card purchases fell 10% with 18.7% of shoppers buying a card compared to 21% last year.
“Pent-up demand on electronics and clothing, plus unparalleled bargains… helped drive shopping this weekend,” said Tracy Mullin, president and CEO of the NRF. “Holiday sales are not expected to continue at this brisk pace, but it is encouraging that Americans seem excited to go shopping again.”
As expected, the largest tally ‑‑ 73.6 million people ‑‑ visited stores and online sites Black Friday followed by 56.9 million Saturday. Another 26.2 million planned to shop Sunday, according to the poll of 3,370 consumers conducted Nov. 27-29.
Spurred by a tough economy and heavy pre-Black Friday media attention, more than 23% of shoppers arrived at stores by 5 a.m., unfortunately leading to chaos and tragedy at a Wal-Mart store on Long Island, N.Y.
An employee in Valley Stream was trampled to death and four others injured as several hundred customers broke through the doors, despite the presence of additional security and erected barricades.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the deceased,” said Hank Mullany, SVP, northeast division of Wal-Mart, in a statement. He said the retailer, which has seen its share of Black Friday-related consumer crushes in previous years, was working with Nassau County police regarding possible criminal charges.

What raw HD uncompressed data?  In NTSC format DVD typically stores 720x480p video data using MPEG-2 compression, while Blu-Ray stores 1920x1080p video data using MPEG-4 or VC-1 comression.  The bit rate of the audio and video data on a DVD-Video maxes out at about 9.8 Mbps, while that on a Blu-Ray, it maxes out at about 48 Mbps.  Since Blu-Ray is storing about 6 times more video data, it can be argued that it is actually storing a more compressed version of the data than DVD-Video (although use of a newer codec means the bitrate is actually being used more efficiently)
