Why are we excluding Japan? Especially FFXIII, where it will sell 1-2 million units in week 1.

Fair question. The reason why Japan-only exclusivity is excluded is because we are trying to track global trends and Japan is just too small on its own to affect the global behavior (less than 5% of the weekly sales of the 360 + PS3) .

Fair enough.  My point was that this does not apply to FFXIII where it will sell as much in Japan as in the other regions.

Yes, but in this thread we attempt to evaluate the HW platform success based on 3rd party support. Not the software sales of those titles.

I've got to second his point on this one.  I believe this game to sell significant HW numbers not to be ignored in a dwindling HD gaming region.  Not sure if it's exclusivity is bound by contract but Sony will do it's best to push this game which means bundles = more HW sales.  It may even usher in a wave of local support depending on critical/commercial success.

Even if it becomes a major hit, Japan is still just 5% of the WW market. It is not going to change anything significant in the global picture.

No. Look at the HD Consoles sales (PS3+360) for the last month (not last year) and you'll see that it is about 5% (actually a bit less).

Thanks. "You're in the movies" is published by Microsoft so it is out. The rest gets in.

Maybe for the 360. For PS3 Japan is about 15% of it's Global sales, inline with Japan's overall market share. Anyway, it seems pretty clear that the reason you wish to ignore Japan is because of 360's negligible sales there.

Even for the PS3 Japan is currently only 7% of the sales on a good week (17K in Japan out of 240K WW). So 360 or PS3, Japan is just too small to affect the WW trends. And I am not looking at the fairly recent weeks where the PS3 was as low as 4K.

To be fair, historically Japan used to be relatively a much console larger market than it is today. But the rest of the world grew well and Japan is shrinking. Right now, Japan is not a factor.
