I'd say no because the ps2 was a bastion for all kinds of gaming: hardcore , casual, whatever, you name it. Wii seems to only harbor the nintendocore and casuals.

IMO i dont think so, i feel the games that the Wii has and will have arent having the same or stronger impact as the games PS2 had. Hardware can only sell so much until there's no appealing games people would want to buy the hardware for to play.

easily and so will the ds in a few years it already beat total ps2 sales in japan and there is no way it wont pass it up in others, but the wii cant beat the ds even now it is creating a bigger gap

Games selling over 5 million: PS2=15, Wii=6(8 if we include Wii Sports and Wii Play)

Game selling over 10 million: PS2=4, Wii=1(3 if we include Wii Sports and Wii Play)

Games selling over 15 million: PS2=1, Wii=0(2 if we include Wii Sports and Wii Play)

Now all of those PS2 games have basically stopped selling at this point. Many of the Wii titles are still selling considerably strong, months or years later. Zelda will be a 5 million seller in the next few months. Mario Kart and Wii Fit will easily become 15 million sellers and dare I say it, even 20 million sellers. Smash Bros. will likely go over 10 million in the next six months.

How can you say there are no appealing games? Sales wise there are plenty, and the Wii amassed this many huge sellers in less time than the PS2 did.

DS IMO has evey chance to do it... now the Wii has many things to face: HD consoles gaining popularity among softcore users, rise in Blu-Ray interest etc...

I doubt it. sure the wii is selling like the PS2, but unlike the PS2. the wii doesn't have the games to cover every genre like the PS2 did. the PS2 is an RPG Monster, sure every current gen console has a fair amount of RPGs but they will never surpass the amount of RPGs the PS2 (or even the PS1) had. the PS2 had a great amount of action games, and Platformers. plus the PS3 and 360 are home to the hardcore gamers. while the wii is home to the Tweenies. ("Mr. Slash, can you play an actual guitar?" XD...)

Short of another major industry shift, the Wii is going to outsell the PS2. Market inertia's funny like that. Current evidence suggests that it will be by a fairly good margin, too.

Strong year over year sales
Can do price cuts
New colors
Convincing marketshare for developers
Cheapest development
Billions of dollars waiting to be spent.

I think the main thing we forgot about, is how much money, Nintendo really has. Last quarter, they posted $1 billion in profit. $1 billion in 3 months...... It only takes maybe $2 million for a commercial. The game they are advertising will make that cost back within the first 3 days of sales.

It is outtrending the PS2. It is definitely outtrending the NES. The NES sold for more than 20 years. Obviously, those last 12 years weren't strong at all, but it was just chillin there. That means the Wii could have 8 years on the market in full force.
