Forums - Nintendo - Could slowing Wii sales in Japan finally prompt some kind of action?

Well they latched on to the GBA and PS2 at the same time. And the GB/SNES/NES at the same time.

It's possible to have a dominant console and handheld in the market but not 2 dominant handhelds and a dominant console. In other words PSP might be hurting Wii's chances. Now of course Wii will do well in the holidays because it's a dominant brand but outside of that its going to struggle unless Nintendo does some pretty bold things. DSi is a start to recrippling the PSP brand and the slew of games for Wii will help that in 2009.

Did I miss something? Isn't the Wii still outselling the competition? they're going to do something cause sales are slowing a teensy bit?

 You aren't missing anything

They have clearly won every week this year except three.

All this talk of slowing Wii sales is subtle trolling. If you read between the lines at the kotaku article, they're really trying to suggest that the Wii is losing steam for reasons other than the economy. Nevermind the fact that sales have been slow for all the consoles all year, save for the 360 spikes.

Of course, one site overreacting means they all will.  Edge reported that overall console sales were down 33% overall, but the put special emphasis on Wii sales being down 24% despite being ahead of the curve.  Very strange.

No price cut, no new colors.  Not yet.

I wasn't thinking the Wii was in trouble. But the fact is that Nintendo could still do something to boost sales again if they felt the need to.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

I think a price drop is needed there, Japan should drop it to like 175 or so.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

Poor Nintendo. Wii is selling out worldwide - and a lot of games from this year were pushed to next year.

I think they are quite happy with sales in Japan - its just a much smaller market than the US or Europe at the moment, esp. with the economic conditions the way they are.

Don't expect anything to change until *global* sales die down.

Well, it still sells better than the competition so i don't think they'll do anything just yet.

And yet, they keep selling way more than the PS3, XBOX360 and PSP.

The competition in Japan is inexistant.

Wii isn't doing well at all in Japan. It was at 50k a week and now it dropped to less than 30k a week. I also have a feeling that there isn't all that much blue ocean gamers buying Wiis in Japan.
