I think Sony's problems in America might not have anything to do with the economy. I'm sure it's not helping but I think one problem may be that the market simply isn't big enough for 3 competitors doing well. In an expanding market such as E/O it's quite capable but America isn't expanding like that market is. I mean it is expanding but not at those rates. Thus we see the dominant force as Wii tapping into the core, the mainstream, and the expanded audience while MS cleans up a good bit of the rest of the core and mainstream. This leaves very little for Sony and the PS3 to claim. And of course that would be severely tightened in our crisis but it happened before this.

And really I don't know if there was much Sony could have done about it for this year because apparently they couldn't do anymore. And they may have been able to have shafted 360 in America if it wasn't for the economy. So I guess it's a bigger role than I give it credit for but I would think this would be the reasoning. Now possibly down the road in a year or 2 it has a better shot but it's lost 2009 in America simply because of those reasons. And if it wants a chance to get a bigger market share then it needs 360 to fade off and Wii to wane down and to pick up the pieces. Not to mention a lower price.

I think what's good though isn't getting the piece GC was getting last year comparatively considering how well PS2 was cleaning up. Shows you that the market has expanded enough where it doesn't get those numbers. Very lucky on that aspect.

So I guess we'll let Sony slide through the holidays in America and hope it gets enough out of Europe and Japan to still do quite well. And then we'll see how it does in 2009 with an inevitable pricedrop and big game releases.

Aren't PS3 fanboys tired of saying that since Lair?

the problem is, you seem to be saying it more than we do.

The PS3 is just priced too high to have any real chances of success. Sony have no one to blame but themselves.

@ Fernando

yeah 2008 was said to be the "year of the PS3"...what a joke right?

hello how are you.

MS only needed to capture America, having the biggest country/gaming country will have a ripple effect that will entice third-parties to make games and multi-platform their games to their console. The world might not like MS much but business is business and they will side with MS to get money.

Once they have enticed third-parties with their dominance in America and paid for some games to be exclusive or multi-platform it was over for PS3. PS3 won't have bottom pit sales, it will be close to xbox or even surpass it by a little but MS did its' damage to Sony. It will be Xbox vs PS from now on which is bad since none of them will differentiate from each other so none will break away with incredible sells like the Wii.

The Wii is so different than both of them, why buy a more expensive console if you can buy the same console for less (PS3 and Xbox offer the same experiences and mostly the same games). In the end MS has a way bigger company and can survive with many price cuts and throwing money at games, that is how monopolies roll.

wow 360 lead just keeps growing =O

Oh come on! He's right I'm so tired of those PS3 fanboy trying to convince people that PS3 will eventually outsell Wii with those suposed ''system sellers'' games. Just stop to overhype your games so can we stop laughing at you.

Wow at the Wii numbers. Expected with the 360 numbers. And Zucas, that's an interesting post about it not being the economy.

I tell you - I agree to a point, but look at it like this. Christmas is nearly a month away and folks are looking for value. They see the Wii is sold out and they see the 360 is $199. That $199 price point is winning folks over. Plus, I have a new Arcade 360 - and I love it. It runs a lot cooler, uses less voltage and has tons - I mean tons - of cheap games for under $20. Plus, MS is making it mandatory to use the NXE, you have to buy a HD - or a 512mb mem card. Do you smell what MS is cooking? Haha ... they are bringing ALL 360 Core and Arcade users into the fold. No more will PS3 folks claim the 360s don't have hard drive and can't run games off of the HD. No more will they be held back.

As a result of going from no-HD to an HD on most units, MS can NOW tout tons of features they couldn't. They can push the GT update and get more sales. They can push BC - play your Xbox games on your 360! - and Sony is left holding the bag and the only one standing when the music stops.

MS is going to leave the game in second - and working to emulate Ninny's success. PS3 will end up second later, but by then, who'll care?

In the end, Sony should have just stuck to the HD and left Blu Ray out. Sure, HD DVD would have won (it was beating the Blu Ray standalones with a stick) and the 360's RROD would have doomed it. My, how the tables have turned.
