Ok I have seen a few threads on this recently and im sure people are tired of this but idc lol.

People who still think the PS3 will over take the 360s lead are saying:

1.Wait for FF13 release in Japan

2.Wait for GT5

3.Wait for God of war 3(i am waiting on this 2 haha)

4. Any PS3 price drops

Ok and i agree that these things will defenatly increase the PS3 sales to catch up to the 360 but is that enough to gain atm 5.8m in sales? Mabey, I think the most important out of all these would have to be the price drop. Then the other thing that will cause the PS3 to sell a lot is of course FF13 japan only release.

Now for the 360 to keep its lead these are the things that will help it.

1. Current price

2. Star Ocean 4 and TLR in Japan

3. Halo games (Recon and Halo wars)

4. New slimmer modle comming out?

The current price would have to be the big one out of these becuase it has increased the sales in all 3 regions andd has been alowing it to beat the PS3 week after week for a couple month straight now. The other big thing would of course be the JRPG that would increase the Japan sales for the 360.

So what are your thoughts on this? Can the 360 hold on? If not why? If so why?

Well both sides seem to be about equal even though ff13 will sell like 1 million consoles.
At this point Sony is catching up already, but the economic situation and the amazing 360 price point is a large variable.

To summize, ps3 needs to expand its library dramatically.

Microsoft will make sure that the 360 comes in 2nd place. You can bet you bottom dollar on that. They will toss so much money in advertising and crap you wont believe it.

360 would probably hold on till a ps3 price drop which won't be coming till late 2009.

But how much dose the pric eneed to drop and how much effect will it have?

People interested in Halo games already have a 360...GoW 2 had almost no effect on 360 sales. Star Ocean games have never been console sellers. TLR and SO4 will probably have the same effect as ToV which means 1-2 weeks of 20k units in Japan. I don't think you can say that about FFXIII. If Sony can drop the PS3 prices at the launch of FFXIII, it will sell like hot cakes in Japan and I doubt you'll see the PS3 under 20k in Japan any longer. Since I don't work for Sony I don't really know if they have plan or if it'll be advantageous for them to drop the price, but it could very well happen imo.

That said, I don't think the PS3 will overtake the 360 sales worldwide anytime soon. The game library is getting much better as well as the online, but the 360 has already established itself as the main HD console in America. Added to that, developers love to develop for the 360 and you'll keep seeing good games for it and it will keep selling outside Japan.

well before the price drop to 400$ the ps3 sold about 100k a week and after the price drop it sold about 175k a week.

Mind you, I didn't say a price drop would boost the ps3 suddenly beyond a 5.8 mil deficit. I meant that a price drop would be necessary for the ps3 to sustain a WW weekly "win" over 360. As for the long term, I only see sony catching up if they stick with the ps3 while M$ dumps the 360 for a new console but that could cause a deficit next round as well. I'm a gamer not an analyst so I really don't know.

The PS3 will overtake the 360 simply because it will have a longer lifespan the 360. Most likely by 2-3 years.

There's the question of which system will sell the most world wide in 2008.

The PS3 will only be Sony's top console until 2012 or so when Sony releases the next one.  MS will probably release one in the same year, or a year earlier.  The PS3 probably won't enjoy a 10 year life cycle like the PSX and PS2 did because of its cost to Sony -- it is too costly and isn't enjoying the succcess of the PS2 and PSX which allowed them to be very profitable even when they were obsolete.
