Forums - General - HD DVD > Blu-Ray Down under (Deal/Value)

I was just browsing through a catalogue someone was so kind to put in my letter box this morning and it would seem as though only a mad man would pick Blu-ray over HD DVD with this deal comparison (back to back on same page)

HD DVD Player + 3 movies of chioce $799

Blu-ray player + No movies $899

These are the only 2 HD Movie players I have ever seen for sale in Australia.

Then again the over-all better deal would be:

PS3 + extra control + 2 free games (Motorstorm + Resistance) $987

^^ Now that's a hell of a deal,

But I have no idea of the quality of the Blu-ray player inside the PS3.

But if I was to buy a stand alone player, why would I pay more and have no free movies?

... I thought you had numbers about how HD DVD is selling better than Blu Ray in Australia.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

Sorry for misleading, however I assume that would be the case with that deal :P

HD DVD Outselling Blu Ray as War Intensifies

By David Richards and Glenn Freeman | Wednesday | 18/07/2007

Only days after Toshiba Australia said that they had achieved sales in the tens of thousands for HD DVD players including those installed in notebooks comes news that in the USA which is one of the biggest CE markets in the world, Blu Ray hardware sales have declined 27% from Q1 to Q2 and Blu Ray software sales had declined 2%.

I'm sure the story is the same in Australia as the rest of the world. Standalone HD-DVD players outsell Blu-Ray. PS3 outsells both. BD movies sell better than HD-DVD...

Interesting though how much free stuff they're bundling with the PS3

Help! I'm stuck in a forum signature!

My bet is the PS3 deal is actually hiding the price cut, cause there is one here, every single store has this same exact deal.

I doubt it.. the ps3 is a blu-ray player, but I really doubt stand alone players are being outsold by hd dvd.

i think stand alone hd dvd players are outselling stand alone blu ray players by 3 to 1. I dont think this would be the case if the ps3 didnt include a blu ray player. A very large percentage of people who want a blu ray player buy the ps3, so i think the stand alone sales are very misleading.

and of course, counting all PS3 sales would be equally misleading, since not all of them are used as blu-ray players.

Interestingly, it seems to be the same conundrum as with whether to count Wii Sports as Software sales. It's unfair to count them but it's also unfair to not count them.

Sales of the movies themselves are probably a better indicator, and I believe BD has the lead there.
