I see your one reason and I raise you five reasons why the PS3 will never pass the 360 in lifetime sales:

1. Reliability - As we all know the 360 had its issues early in its lifecycle which caused Microsoft to extend the warranty to three years. Now that the 360 has been nearly three years on the market, this initiative reported by a trustworthy source should help Microsoft to sell replacement systems to current owners who were lucky enough that their launch 360s didn't break yet.

2. 10 year plan - Microsoft does what Sony does. They copied Buzz, Singstar, Gran Turismo, you name it. So it's not too far fetched that they'll copy Sony's famous 10 year plan as well. Some may argue that the 360 isn't as futureproof as the PS3, but if history has told us one thing, then it is that Microsoft is big in patching things and doing minor updates.

3. Wii60 is a better combo than PS360 - The 360 has great games and a wonderful online service in Xbox Live. This likely causes many gamers to play for hours a day without having time to cook themselves a proper meal, so they'll likely order pizza or get some other fast food. Of course that's not going to be good for their health, so why not get a Wii with Wii Fit to get some exercise without having to leave the house? It makes perfect sense. As a side effect, that's the reason why Wii Fit will outsell the PS3 over its lifetime.

4. Image - Sony isn't cool anymore. As you can read in this well researched article, the days of PlayStation are numbered. The popularity of the Halo franchise is just too overwhelming to match for Sony. I feel sorry for the author's brother too (he owns a PS3).

5. There are more important things than gaming to Sony fans - As Sony fans have become older, their lives have changed as well. They are looking into what life has to offer beyond videogames (and playing b3yond). Don't believe me? Think about this: In the week of Metal Gear Solid 4's release our good old friend DMeisterJ didn't buy a PS3. No, he decided to buy a Wii instead! And he's one of the biggest Sony and MGS fans we have here on VGC! Why would he do such a thing? The most plausible explanation is that a girl played a major role in his decision. Girls dig the Wii, so it's not unreasonable at all to assume that DMeisterJ bought a Wii to impress a girl. I bet it paid off and was worth it for him. Of course he doesn't tell us about this, because like the attention whore he is, he wants the infamous "Are you a virgin?" thread to live on forever.

6. x360 is more than 2 times cheaper. Still they compete. Imagine if they had the same price tag - the days of PlayStation are numbered >- Yeah ok

Still they compete, and probably they will never have the same price tag. When the PS3 will be at 199$ the x360 will be at 59$. Thats the only way they can win. M$ knows this and they r doing it

Hum ? And what do you think Sony plans to do to fill the 50% gap of games difference between the 2 consoles ??

Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.

I remember that thread! One of your less epic ones. And you probably know this, but DMJ has a PS3 now. So there goes that 'argument'. I'm surprised you didn't link to that 'Is the PS3 Sony's Last Console?' article. Was that written after you did this?

OT: Yes, the PS3 will outsell the 360 in Japan by 6 million units in the next four years, while the 360 and PS3 sell equal amounts in America and others...

If the PS3 comes second, it will beat the 360 in Others and Japan, and come close in North America.

The only way they can win is deliver an affordable system?

If that's the case then they deserve to win (although it's not really helping them against the Wii).

I hope Sony will learn from this experience and will make their next box cost less than a used Honda.

I feel like screaming everytime I hear a Sony fan[boy] bang on about how the 360 is half the price of PS3 yet they compete and what would happen if they were the same price and bla bla bla.

First it is not half the price.  Hardly anyone buys the arcade.

Secondly, PS3 fans are the ones always going on about how the PS3 is greater value for money.  If it is greater value for money then of course its sales should compete even though it cost more.  For example look at the new 3 and 5 series BMWs.  Last gen here in the UK the 3 series were everywhere and almost like the most common car.  5 series were not very common.  Understandably as the 3 series looked much better.  This time around the 5 series looks much better and is the much better car in other ways.  It costs about £5,000 to £10,000 more (for the entry levels - at the top end the gap is even much bigger) but what has happened?  The 5 series sells way more than the 3 series.  Most people would rather pay the extra £5,000 to get the better car.  Random example but you get what I mean.  If a 360 Premium costs £170 and a PS3 £280 but the PS3 is the greatest value for money thing ever to grace the videogame industry (as Sony fans seem to indicate) people should be much more willing to pay the extra £110 for this amazing item.

Third who the hell cares which costs more?  Sony chose to make an expensive console.  They knew it would compete with the 360 when they were setting the price (they were probably too arrogant to think it would compete with Wii).  Will you people please come back to reality and stop imagining either a different PS3 or a PS3 as it is but for much less.  Neither of these scenarios is reality.  The first is not reality because the PS3 is out and it is what it is.  The second is not reality because the losses on a £170 PS3 would kill Sony.
