Forums - Gaming Discussion - 1UP Network Chooses Best Gams of E3

Instead of choosing the best in specific categories, they listed the 20 games that had the best E3 showing according to them in no particular order.

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3161591

As we do each year, we've sorted through the hundreds of games at E3 and chosen our very favorites. But because of the change in format of this year's E3, we wanted to do something a little different with our Best of Show awards this year. Instead of trying to pick favorites in all sorts of categories, we wanted to just highlight a bunch of games that we thought were notable -- games that really stood out from the rest of the pack and are worth being on your radar. With this in mind, here are our favorites from this year's E3 show (note: these games were all playable at E3, not just shown on video).

Call of Duty 4 (Xbox 360, PS3, PC) (This game has been winning a lot of the E3 awards so far)

Finally making the leap out of World War II, the latest Call of Duty wowed us with its incredibly detailed visuals, cool settings, awesome weaponry, and smart surprises. All that and an open beta heading to Xbox Live made this one of the most buzzed about games of E3 2007.

LittleBigPlanet (PS3)

LBP left everyone intrigued when it was announced at GDC earlier this year, but E3 is where it really got to show off. The level design process is as easy and enjoyable-looking as we were hoping. Sony's goals are lofty, but they're making believers out of even the coldest cynics.

Rock Band (360 and PS3)

Whether you dream of smashing some drums or grasping the microphone while you sing your heart out, this Guitar Hero killer is gonna let you accomplish it. There's still that nagging cost issue to worry about, but can you really put a price tag... on your dreams?

Mass Effect (360)

Mass Effect is one of those games that looks better every time it's showcased. A massive, open galaxy to explore, fast-paced sci-fi combat, and a plot epic enough to make Star Wars blush -- what's not to love! Best of all, we found out at E3 that the game will arrive this November.

Fallout 3 (360, PS3 and PC)

Let the hardcore fanboys whine. Personally, we're psyched for what we've seen so far of Bethesda's take on the Fallout franchise. Beautiful graphics and a return of the amazing setting the series is known for is sure to equal a hit. This had a lot of us buzzing at the show.

Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)

Gamers might get bitter over Nintendo's new-found success with the mainstream, but not all is lost. They're still pumping out some amazing-looking games in the franchises we love. E3 brought us new levels plus the first ever look at the bumble bee suit powerup.

Legend of Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass (DS)

Any Zelda game is going to draw attention to itself, but Phantom Hourglass is especially notable as a continuation of the Gamecube's Zelda: Wind Waker and as the first title in the series to use special DS touch screen controls. Don't be shocked if this game ends up being a must-buy.

Metroid Prime 3 (Wii)

New Wii-mote controls seem to be turning this into the most shooter-y Metroid Prime game yet, but those aren't the only changes in store. With more worlds to explore and a lessened emphasis on the series mainstay of backtracking, Retro Studios has fans very curious.

Halo 3 (360)

What more can be said about Halo 3? Regardless of the hype, the game's going to sell millions, but thankfully it's looking like it will actually be worth it. The video at Microsoft's press conference wasn't that hot, but our hands-on time had the game faring much better.

Burnout Paradise (PS3/360)

EA is well-known for iteration, so the racing revolution that Burnout Paradise presents was a pleasant surprise. The game sports an ambitious persistent online world and open-ended gameplay where any road, intersection, or traffic jam could be the start of your next race.

Heavenly Sword (PS3)

In an effort to kill that tired "Goddess of War" moniker, Sony finally opened the floodgates on Heavenly Sword at E3, revealing varied gameplay that utilized a second playable character (Kai) and sharp tilt controls. Heavenly stuff, indeed.

Bioshock (360 and PC)

Some consider Bioshock to be the kind of game that critics love and mainstream gamers ignore (ala The Chronicles of Riddick). Our minds are still being melted by this stunning, experimental shooter; with luck, yours will be too when it ships next month.

God of War: Chains Of Olympus (PSP)

For all the worries about the limited control scheme and lower tech of the PSP, one thing is abundantly clear after playing Chains of Olympus: this is a God of War experience, through and through. And that is a very good thing. It looks great and plays just as good.

Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction (PS3)

Tools of Destruction brings the series back to its platforming origins in this gorgeous new iteration, featuring hilarious new weapons (Groovitron!), worthwhile motion controls, and Clank-centric segments that have us counting the days until release.

Crysis (PC)

Long revered for its visuals, Crysis came alive at E3 with a wide-open demo that allowed us to jack boats and make use of the nanosuit's myriad abilities. Luckily, Crysis is not just a pretty face, packing both narrative and variability in its campaign.

Half Life 2: Orange Box (PC, 360 and PS3)

The Orange Box may represent the best deal in gaming, and Valve used E3 to show off more of its five-pack, including new looks at Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Team Fortress 2, and Portal, a first-person puzzle adventure that's an absolute blast.

Everyday Shooter (PS3)

Jonathan Mak's one-man project, Everyday Shooter, came out of left field to trip us up with its quirky combination of Rez-like visuals (running in 1080p, no less) and music and gameplay reminiscent of Geometry Wars. Score one for the PlayStation Network.

Killzone 2 (PS3)

After all of the hoopla over the pre-rendered target video shown in 2005, Guerilla finally showed off in-game footage of Killzone 2 at E3. And while it didn't quite match the CG stuff, it was pretty darn close -- certainly enough to get us really excited.

Skate (360 and PS3)

Tony Hawk has ruled the genre unopposed since 1999, but EA's Skate may finally give the Birdman a run for his money. Hawk fanatics may struggle at first with the analog controls, but actually nailing tricks in Skate is an incredibly rewarding experience.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (PS3)

Naughty Dog's foray into gritty realism looks better every time we see it. The E3 demo of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune opened up a pair of new areas, exposing the really cool acrobatic aspects of the game and showing off freshly-implemented tweaks.

If you look at the list you will find: 6 PS3 exclusives, 3 360 exclusives (including 1 PC/360 game), 2 Wii exclusives, 1 DS exclusive, 1 PSP exclusive and 1 PC exclusive. The rest were multiplatform games (6 games).

This is especially impressive since people keep saying the PS3 doesn't have good exclusive games, if you look at this list it has a great many. Not to mention that some big ones were left out because they weren't playable at E3 (MGS 4 and FF XIII/XIII Versus).

If PS3 could've managed to get their price down to $400 they would've slaughtered this holiday season. Now I think they might still beat 360 if they drop the 80GB to $500 even with a 360 price drop but it'll be a lot closer and they won't catch up as much as they could be.

I still think it's near impossible for Sony to not drop the price of the 80gb unit to 500 dollars after the 60gb runs out, because it will be a price hike and that's crazy.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

Woohoo thats alot of EXCLUSIVE goodness. Now who can say the PS3 has no games!

End of 2014 Hardware Predictions (03/03/14)

PlayStation 4: 12-15million

Xbox One: 7-10 million

Wii U: 8-9 million (Changed 01/04/2014 from 7-9 --> 8-9 million)

Sony can cut the price if they no longer bundle in motorstorm, which to me means very likely we will see a $499.99-$549.99 80gb ps3 this holiday season.

Eh, I highly disagree.  Sony is not going to win this Christmas no matter what.  They have a better future than 360 I think, but with exclusive GTA stuff and Halo, Sony ain't pulling off any sort of upset any time soon.  The only problem is that they have so many promising games on the horizen, but many of them are unproven IPs.  I personally think this is awesome, unlike Nintendo who has all franchises, but for the general public they just may not sell as much.  Lair has also shown that there may be too much hype behind unprovens also.  I like the direction they are going, but everything is still very uncertain for the PS3.

What if they still have 60GBs left for NA will they drop the price further to $399 just to get rid of them.

Umm.. while the numbers look impressive for the PS3 we have to remember that two of the big exclusives, Little Big Planet and Killzone 2 don't even come out until next year. Also one of their exclusives, Everyday Shooter, is being created by one person for the Playstation Network, does it really compare to the other major games on that list?

Orange Box is a "five-pack"?

What are the other two games, HL2 and HL2: Ep 1?

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )
