Going by their shipments for September then they can only really mean shipped, which isn't surprising as it's not uncommon for manufacturers to use "installed base" to refer to shipments. Anyway, 2.5m expected to be shipped during first two months of Q4, I wonder how many they can ship in December.

And consumers have responded; according to Mount, console sales increased 42 percent month over month, 62 percent in Europe and a hefty 500 percent in Japan. "Later today, NPD is going to release October sales... and we expect these numbers will show that we continue to outsell [PS3] by a ratio of two to one."

Interesting Europe numbers (+62% month over month), although 360 hasn't been outselling PS3 in US two to one (last month it outsold PS3 by three to two), maybe they meant LTD, where 360 has sold around twice as much as PS3.

All I read was The ps3 is going to get spanked this Holiday.

That is an assumption you are making.

In this case it is going to be wrong....but I guess being pleasantly surprised will help you.

No she means NPD today as 2 to 1 margin. So for the month of October it should show that. With that said this was also said earlier this week by Microsoft Division head Robbie Bach as well.

no it isn;t

"Mount says that by the end of this month, Microsoft predicts Xbox 360's global installed base will reach 25 million units, surpassing that of the first Xbox."

Same thing happened last year with ps3 as a previous person mentioned. where it had said "install base" it had obviously meant shipped.

The article doesn't specify through to consumers anywhere....if CAPS means I am angry then you are wrong...I use a LOT of CAPS..just like that

Installed base means number of consoles at home and plugged in/useable.  Generally it's interchangeable with sell-through to consumers that we track.  Late in the console's life of course it goes down as systems break and get thrown out/sold off/what have you.  Now marketing types may misuse the term to mean whatever number they're trying to spin, but that doesn't change what it actually means.  Since all we're given here is an indirect quote, it could mean just about anything, but they aren't likely to refer to worldwide shipments in the middle of a quarter like that.  It's likely just a rough internal estimate.

Wasn't he talking about Europe? Not USA.

Maybe, but 360 hasn't outsold PS3 by two to one in US NPD since October 2007 (was actually three to one that month), so it's the use of the word "continue" which I was questioning.

That would mean possibly 27 28 mill by years end.

Now that would be some year,
