Forums - Gaming - Gears of War 2 is a disappointment (in some respects)

Personally, I liked the fact that Gears 1 had virtually no story to speak of. I was disappointed to hear that they were trying to step up Gears 2 in that regard.

There's nothing wrong with going for the mindless action genre. Not everything needs to be an attempt to recreate a Dickens' novel; that applies doubly to the videogame industry that is so notoriously bad at creating engaging plot lines.

That's fair enough. My problem isn't the mindless action genre, the problem is that GoW2 is attempting to be something "deeper" than it really is. I don't recall Die Hard having any moments of philosophical pondering and it was better off that way. The VA is another issue, it's downright bad.

I don't hold games to the same standards of story telling/development that I would a movie

Why not? And why shouldn't we expect the same quality voice acting from a game as from a movie? The budgets are similar, but dev's seem lazy to pony up an extra few dollars for quality VA.

Interactivity.  That's what sets games apart from movies; you trade off the "emotional" attachment you recieve for strong character developement with the fun you garner from controlling and directly influencing (to some extent) the actions of your character.

Let me be clear though; I do NOT like long drawn out cutscenes in my games; storylines to any game FOR ME, are the icing on the cake, NOT the reason for the cake.  AND the cake is a lie anyway.

What's the standard? For quality storytelling/voice-acting in an action game? Just wondering?

I don't hold games to the same standards of story telling/development that I would a movie, so I wasn't all that disappointed. *Small Spoiler alert* Only scene I thought was muffed by the voice acting was very early on when Dom finds out that they missed Maria again. That came across as, well forced. Otherwise, I was pretty happy with the story and even felt that a couple of parts were honestly, pretty good. The Facility reveals (via Niles) and 'A Time for us' specifically.

I don't know but i've yet to play a game with voice acting on par with your average CG children's flick. Please don't mention Metal Gear either, because while the voice acting is good in terms of videogames, it pales in comparison to the standard set by movies.

^ heavenly sword. It has precious from lord of the rings VA the king.

AT least in Spanish the Voice acting IS solid and very well executed.
So no complains in my side.

Psychonauts VA was superior to your average children`s flick.

And it is quite fun to see that you still argue with him. I thought you were one of the smart ones...

Hey somebody has to bite the bullet or this will never be another Dark Knight thread. I'll exit once the ball gets rolling.

well funny thing is that most reviewers pulled up the story in gears 2, but in resistance 2 story they marked scores down for it for supposedly having a weak story!

but i guess gears 2 is still a good game even though the story side is a bit dungy.

i dont think i will be buying gears of war 2, i have to many games to get through before i boot up gears 2.

Wow, you see that is why I should trust the elderly. They always know better...

You are wise, sir. Wise indeed...

This game thrives on it's non-stop action, cheesy one-liners, and pure-sugarcoated-candy-for-the-eyeballs graphical prowess! The biggest complaint from the last game was not enough story explaining the locusts, and the characters backgrounds. They give this title 3 times the story of the last, and people still complain. You cant please everyone, that's just the nature of things. I loved the story and the game-play. Personally, this game did everything right by me...XD.
