Forums - Sony Discussion - Maguire claims competitors are waning, best is to come from PS3

Dear god... so most of these Sony dimwits get paid to be stupid! No wonder they come out with so much BS. It is shameful and it is disturbing :s

He's right in a way that PS3 really can't do much worse games- and saleswise, so it's basically only upwards from here.

Ever since the PS3 had its launch, the future have only been brighter - if Sonys PR is to believe.
If we look at games that are "granted" to hit a certain console sometime in the future, Wii looks to be in the best position and 360 in the worst.

Anyway, promising something into the future isn't really the best way to do PR (although, that's all Sony can do at the moment), because people usually get their consoles after they have "delivered". And when looking at the thing from another point of view; wouldn't it make sense to get the console when the games are here and the price have gone down, if the future is so good, that is. The way i see it, so far Wii and 360 have delivered better than PS3.

I've said this a million times and I'll say it again. Sony and its fanboys are delusional. I have never seen anything like it in my life. Console wars are always going to happen, but this gen is absolutely ridiculous.

1. The PS3 has not even come close yet to 1st or 2nd place. It's barely made a dent in the gap between it and the 360 in 2008 (the alleged "year of the PS3"), and it will never catch the Wii.

2. System sales are not waning. The PS3 is once again being outsold week after week, and it's even been beaten by the 360 in Japan a few times over the last couple of months. The Wii is still not keeping up with demand, and the 360 has hit the sweet spot as far as price.

3. According to VGChartz. the PS3 is currently behind the 360 by 5.81 million units. That's a bigger gap than it was a month or two ago when it was a 5.5 million unit deficit. Basically, the ground they gained from MGS4 is gone. This very site predicted a similar pattern through the holiday season with the PS3 only very slightly outselling the 360 because of a sales boost in Japan.

Despite all of this, I read posts EVERY DAY about how the PS3 is gaining ground, is claiming 2008 as the year of the PS3, and will truly hit its stride in 2009. This is just delusional thinking and it really amazes me sometimes. I think the 360 will eventually lose to the PS3.............probably about when the next gen is about to hit. But that's where the second stage of the delusion kicks in. Do you guys honestly think that Sony is not going to have to release a new console within a year of when the other new systems release?

No matter how much you hate MS or the 360, no matter how much you want your console of choice to "win" this war, you should probably be aware that it's far too late for the other two consoles to die an early death. They have all established themselves as viable systems and will all post good numbers in the end. But it's fascinating that Sony is being so cocky when they are making the system with the weakest sales by a pretty big margin.

Basically Sony and other websites are Reassuring Sony fans that they bought the right console,Its them patting Sony fans on the back and say "its ok,Wait till they unlock the full power of the PS3" and to be honest real fans KNOW that,Me and CGI-Quality dont need to be comforted.

I'm sure you're right.  At some point, the PS3's full power will be used..........but how long are you going to be willing to wait?  There will be a PS4 before the "ten year life cycle" of the PS3 is up, and it will have to be more affordable for the consumer and more user friendly for the developer or it will suffer the same problems that the PS3 is suffering. Are you telling me that you're waiting until the next gen is in full force to be satisfied with your PS3 purchase?  That seems like kind of a waste compared to the other two consoles that are, for all intents and purposes, living up to their potential.

Sony has stockholders to please.  Plain and simple.  They're telling you this stuff because they want their shareholders to be happy, not because they're trying to reassure you and make you feel better.  They don't care if you're feeling all warm and fuzzy about your console.  Really, they don't.

The definition of insanity is repeating the same exact thing over and over and expecting different results.  Sony keeps talking about the ten year plan, the potential of the PS3, the year of the PS3, all the games it's going to have, blah blah blah.  It's been like that since the PS3 launched, and it never does anything to help their situation.  It's always, "Wait until _______ is released", or "wait until the year _____ and the PS3 will REALLY start to hit its stride."  I'm really surprised that people actually care when Sony says things like this anymore.  And I am just flabbergasted that he is implying that the other two consoles' sales are waning as his console is being outsold AND as we're going into what promises to be a high selling holiday season for all three machines.

All that being said, I'm in no way saying that the PS3 is a bad console.  I'm just saying that there's been a lot of over promising and under delivering, and I would be mad as hell if I were a PS3 owner.  How far are you going to let them string you along?

Sony domination started in 2008 according to fanboys... It also seems to have ended in 2008. Sony's brand name should not be underestimated, but if both Microsoft and Nintendo come out with a new console in 2010-11 timeframes Sony will be in trouble if they don't come up with one as well.

Then, they have the job of explaining why their 10 year console only lasted 5 and why the next generation will not see massive delays for almost all AAA games like this one did. I hope Sony wakes up. The holiday Sony exclusives are all now shipping for North America and they are not in a position where they are gaining ground on 360. If anything the sales gap will widen for the rest of the year. Next year sounds better, but so did 2007 and 2008 in the previous years.

To a certain extent he is right. He is not talking about sales, but the PS3/X360/Wii hardware package.

MS have now played their full hand with the X360. The price cuts are the last it will get in its mainstream life, the feature set will not have any major additions past the NXE update and games will tend to maintain multiplatform status with a few new exclusives sprinkled in. In other words, the platform has just peaked. Basically its a move to grind Sony out of the marketplace.

The Wii has limited lifespan in its present state. For a "nextgen console" who launched in 2006/2007 to be talking about an update in 2010/2011 means that even Nintendo recognise this. This is not a bad thing, I think most people would realise that the longevity of the Wii will be lower than the other HD consoles. The console also does not have a strong core games offering announced for next year. Yet.

Sony have their mainstream price cuts to come next year, have hinted at new feature sets such as music store and new controller schemes, as well as the largest 1st/2nd party developer group in the market. Large 3rd party development firms have hinted they are leading on the PS3 - this will help the multiplatform porting weaknesses that the console gets. I think in terms of improving position, Sony has the most room to move.

Actually, Sony are in a remarkable position at the moment. I, and all but the most diehard fans, had written the PS3 off this time last year - thought it was finished. The fact that they have picked themselves up off the canvas and landed a few punches this year is testament to that company. I personally agree in this respect, it has been the year of the PS3 - the year they got on their feet and stayed competitive.

I think he may be right. Whether its a ever going to be a winning position, who knows?

Slimline 360 maybe?

Yes, the 360 has just finished it's 3rd year of sales, so it is indeed waning (waning in a general sense, obviously I'm not predicting sales will plummet, and certainly not in Nov/Dec)

The PSWii have just finished their 2nd year, and thus have a year of higher sales ahead of them before they too start to wane

stupid marketing crap...

Maguire: "Competing formats are on their way down"

Sony UKs managing director Ray Maguire has admitted that the company takes it time bringing products to market - but he argued that the PlayStation 3 is now hitting its stride as competing formats could be seen as past their peak.

"Yes, we might take a bit longer sometimes to bring a product to market, but when we do, we bring you the most powerful gaming platform ever to hit - and it will be something that will around for a very long time," said Maguire, speaking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz.

"It's nowhere near even halfway through its lifecycle, and I could argue that some other competing formats are on their way down right now," he added.

This right here is why I hate Sony.  Well actually there are many reasons why I hate Sony but top of the list is the bull shit their senior officers spit out.

Just because it is going into year 3 doesn't mean sales will go up.  I have never met a consumer who said, "Its time to buy console X because it is in year 3 of its cycle"...

Fact, is the Wii is continuing to win the hardware sales category with little to no competition from 360 and PS3.  Any 360 or PS3 fanboy that thinks sales will skyrocket against the Wii next year is delusional right now as even without new AAA software Wii is still kicking ass.
