Forums - Nintendo - So I bought Paper Mario

My favourite is TTYD, but the first one was amazing too. SPM was alright, just, turn-based is better. If there is a Paper Mario 4 of some sort, I hope they revert back to turn based.

current mk wii worldwide sales (jan 9th): 553k

is it really that good? i have it for n64 and i started the game but it seemed so kiddy. i wouldn't normally call a nintendo game kiddy since they get a bad unfair reputation for that. but it truly seemed like it was specifically made for a small child who's never played an rpg before. i mean i was playing rpg's like dragon warrior and final fantasy when i was like 6 years old, so i think even when i was a kid that game would've seemed too simple for me. does it actually get better after the first few hours. i played like 3 hours into it and found its gameplay painfully simple. any thoughts on whether it gets better after the beginning or is it just a really simply made game?

end of '08 predictions: wii - 43 million,  360 - 25 million, ps3 - 20 million

Games I've beat recently: Super Mario Galaxy, Knights of the Old Republic, Shadow of the Collossus

Proud owner of wii, gamecube, xbox, ps2, dreamcast, n64, snes, genesis, 3DO, nes, atari, intellivision, unisonic tournament 2000, and gameboy

I also downloaded it from VC. I started it but some other game got in the way. I plan on finishing it later though. I first played TTYD and loved it, so I had to play the original. It is really a great game of what I have played. Hopefully I will get back to it by the end of the year. Definitely one of the best VC games.

Currently Playing: Mario Kart 7, Mario Kart 8, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Super Smash Bros for Wii U

Predictions:

Super Mario Galaxy will pass Super Mario 64 in total sales CORRECT!

Excellent game. No doubt about it

The game starts off very basic, but if you've played it for three hours, you must have reached the point in the game where the action commands are finally enabled. After that it starts to pick up and battles become more interesting. You get dozens of badges over the course of the game which let you use various special attacks in battles or help you in one way or another. While normal enemies aren't that dangerous unless they come in groups of four, the boss battles take some strategy.

There are tons of goodies to find in the game and there is no need for level grinding if you got the hang of the action commands. Basically Paper Mario is an RPG that has all the fun gameplay elements of the genre while getting rid of the tedious ones. Btw, the sequel on the Gamecube is superior in every way.

I agree with every line of that, especially the bolded.

Oh, except the last line. It's superior technically, yes, but about 50% of the design was ripped out of PM, including four chapters (1, 4, 5 and 7 are identical to PM's 1, 3, 5 and 7 respectively.) and a lot of the puzzles and items.

one of my favorite games of all time

"If new things are so great, where have they been the whole time?"

The original Paper Mario is fantastic. The GC one was great as well... the latest one is... not so good. Not sure why they changed the game so drastically.

I personally consider Paper Mario to be the true successor to the original Mario Bros games on the NES/SNES. It was always more appealing to me than any of the 3D platformer Mario games (although they are certainly fine games).

Agreed. I remember being so excited for Super Paper Mario, only to be met with sheer disappointment. That's probably the reason I haven't played through the whole game.

Heh. Never played it though I've heard many great things about it.

I have, however, played Paper Mario Wii- pretty awesome game.
At the time it was released, I did not want to play it 'cuz of the Nintendo/SquareEnix relationship... and Super Mario RPG (since it is like a spiritual sequel or something like that)

Well, now that S-E has finally released SM:RPG on VC...
I think I'm willing to try it now =)
