Forums - Nintendo - The Nintendo DS. (Questions/Future Owner)

As the title says... i'll get right to it then and skip the minor stuff.

  1. Models, i hear there are ATLEAST 3 models of the DS, just like the PSP, my question is Which of the 3 models is the best to own? and please dont be biased towards a "Certain" model of the DS just because you own it, i'd like true facts thank you.
  2. I'd also like to know what Exclusive RPG/ 1st party Games for the DS is worth picking up, my fave genres for handhelds as follows... JRPG's of all kinds in general,Platformers,Puzzles,Adventure.
  3. I mainly bought my PSP for great exclusives like God of War Portable and Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII. Is there anything that atleast comes close to how Epic these games are?
  4. Im a HD/Graphics Fanboy, but i do still like these so called "Sprites" just because no matter how much of a Hardcore HD fanboy i may be, 2D Graphics will never fade, anyways what game on the DS to this day takes it to the limit in terms of graphics?
  5. Can it play games from any of the Older Gameboy games?
  6. Im not and NEVER will own a Nintendo Wii, that said is the DS able to hook up to a PC Via USB cable like the PSP? (PSP connects to PS3s/PC's/Mac's/Laptops/ipods Etc. with Ease) What does the DS Connect to besides the flat gamecube?
  7. Wifi, is it built in like the PSP?
  8. How good is the battery life? i can only assume it depends on the model of the DS so i'd like to know which last the longest since, i have to admit the PSP does not suit my gaming needs when it comes to Hours and Hours of on the go gaming.
  9. What are the "Down-Sides" of the DS and of course the overall benifits?
  10. Whats the Price Tag for each model?
  11. Any Games that are great that are dirt cheap to this day?
  12. Lastly i could really careless about this one since my PSP is a Mini multi-media thing but lets just clear this up shall we? can the DS play Videos/ Surf the net/ Store Pictures And music?
  13. Oh wait one more, What sort of memory does the DS Use? for Example the PSP Uses Memory Sticks Via Sony/Sandisk.

Ahh, well thank you for putting up with me and my noob like questions, i see no harm in owning another handheld so i'd like to know as much as i can before i start acting like some sort of consumer freak and randomly buying crap products left and right.

~Thanks in Advance all.~

1. Well, DS Phat (first one), is pretty much inferior to DS lite in every way. DSi is comming out in ~ a year from now I guess. It will have more features, and should be an improvement over the previous ones. It has a few cool changes, as a camera (3 megapixel), downloadable games (like XBLA and Virtual Console), and some other small features. It also has double touch-screens. Perhaps a few games will be compatible with DSi only. DSi is a bit more expensive than DS lite, so you need to check it out a bit for yourself. If you're big on downloadable games, buy the DSi, if not, there aren't any huge improvements.

2. The DS has a huge amount of RPGS. Some recomendations would be

The World ends with you. Great JRPG with a unique playstyle, made by the Kingdom Hearts team. Uses the Stylus a lot, in a great way. Has a very Japanese touch.

New Super Mario Bros. - the real sequel to the NES and SNES mario games. Pretty awesome game I've heard.

Fire Emblem DS - remake of the original Fire Emblem. Strategy Role-playing game. Turnbased. It will come out first half of 09 in Americas, and in 2008 in Europe. The game is going to rock. Still, if you're not a fan of very difficult games, it may not be the game for you.

Tetris DS - Tetris with lots of different modes. If you like Tetris, this is the best you'll get.

3. Not really. Has to be The World Ends with you or The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. There aren't a lot of high quality 3D action adventure games on the DS.

4. The best looking DS game is Final Fantasy IV, I believe. Its cutscenes look like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=119Ay49BsGg. Here's how it looks in Gameplay. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8nJQr29Py4

Some games might look better than it, but not by a lot I believe.

5. The DS lite can play Gameboy Advance games, but not Gameboy or Gameboy Colour. The DSi can only play DS games. So for backwards compability, you would have to go DS lite.

6. I do not know anything about this, sorry.

7. Wifi is built in. Connecting is very easy if you have a router at least.

8. DS lite has huge battery life. On GBA games, it can last 40 hours. On DS games, it lasts 15 hours on the lowest light settings, but if you are inside, that works great. There are 5 modes I believe, and they go gradually down to 5-7 hours for the highest light setting. That setting makes it possible to play no matter how sunny it is outside. The DSi has far shorter battery life, only ~ 10 hours at the lowest light settings.

9. Downsides compared to PsP is that it has worse graphics. It's like a N64. Upsides are the Stylus. I don't really know what to tell you here.

10. Ooh, though question. You live in the U.S, right? Right now it costs 129 dollars for the DS lite, but once the DSi hits Americas, it might sink to 99 dollars. The DSi is at 169-189 dollars I believe.

11. Lots. Still, you cannot ask me, I live in Norway, and games never hit bargain bins here.

12. The DS lite can surf the net, but it's crap, and you have to buy a game to do it. I believe it will be far better on DSi, but not as good as PsP. The DSi has photos and stuff, and a pictochannel to chat with other people. The DS lite has none of those.

13. I don't know really. This isn't my field at all.

And just so you know it, 2 of your "noob questions" were a bit too advanced for me :D

That is VGChartz LONGEST review. And it's NOT Cute Kitten DS

1. Yes and no. There are 3 models of the DS, the original one, nicknamed the DS Phat is very hard to find, the 3rd version, the DSi, hasn't been released in the USA, it will be in 2009. The DSi will have two cameras, an SD slot and several improvements over the DS Lite, it will not have a GBA slot and lower battery life, but it will recharge faster.

2. This will take a while, I'll answer this one separately.

3. Since I haven't played these two games I can't say.

4. Later.

5. GBA games.

6. Don't think so and careful with the "flat GameCube" remark.

7. Yes, but you will a Wi-Fi zone to connect it.

8. It depends on the brightness level, I remember seeing a graph with the info, I'll search for it. For DS lite lowest brightness setting 15-19 hours, highest brightness setting 5-8

9. Not as good graphics as PSP, only thing that I can think of.

10. A DS Lite costs about $130.

11. Look at Amazon.

12. The DS Lite can't without some accessories, the DSi can.

13. The DS Lite doesn't need memory, the games come on cartridges, the DSi has 256 MB of internal flash memory and can use SD cards.

Hope this helps.

False.

I got DS about 3 weeks ago so i think i can help you.

1. DS Lite is the most popular one get that one is light, in nice colours, DSi is coming out next year so if you want it you have to wait.

2. Love RPG's? The World Ends With You, Final Fantasy IV, Etrian Odyssey 1&2, Final Fantasy 3,Final Fantasy III, Final Fantasy Tactics A2, Pokemon and much more coming. With Fire Emblem out in December.

3. Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass is a brilliant game for me better then GOW:Chains of Olympus (played both), depends thou what do you meet by Epic , Graphically DS does not come near GoW or CC on the PSP yet its library is amazing

4. Hard to say i havent played many games yet, but Zelda and FF IV look really good.

5. If you get DS Lite then yes you can use GBA, DSi gets rid of the slot but it will get some sort of avaliability to get games from DS ware shop.

6. DS does not have media capabilities so it does not really connect to many things. it's purely a gaming device.

7. Yes

8. Got it few weeks ago and it is able to go like 6-7 hours straight on highest settings.

9. Graphics are inferior to the PSP, and it's quite easy to break , but saying that it has amazing potential and games.

10. It's 99 Pounds in the Uk, and around 120$ in the US.

11. Loads of Games are cheap now, just look for occasions i've bout TWEWY for 15 Pounds and Zelda for 14.

12. DSi will surf the net, but DS is purely a gaming machine.

13. There will be memory cards for DSi

Yikes, @ all of the above, thanks for the huge wave of info, i hear its a fun little portable device and at around 99-130 USD i'd say its a fair price.

So from what you guys have put down it basicly looks like this...

DS Lite > DSi >>>DS Phat?

Okay then, between the Lite and i, which would be best in terms of all of the above?

Well, depends on what kind of gamer you are.

DSi has shorter battery life, and costs at least 50% more. The DSi also lacks the ability to play Gameboy Advance games.

It has a few extra features, as downloadable games, a pictochat channel so you can chat online with your friends, a picture editor, and that's pretty much it.

There aren't any huge improvements. You lose the ability to play GBA, but gain the ability to play downloadable games. Overall, I don't see why you should buy DSi.

@Bolded text- This is exactly why in my personal opinion im getting a DS in the first place, my PSP's battery is sort of like the 360's RROD, you never know when the thing is gonna sneak up on ya. and a 50% higher price tag is not very good aswell, we dont like that.

Thanks Oy by that statment alone DS Lite wins by default. so if played on the minimum settings its around 15 hours or so correct?

False.

Also, I know this won't affect your decision since the DSi is a while out, but 300,000 pixels = .3 megapixels, not 3 megapixels.
