Forums - Sales - Stupidest quote from sony yet!

mitsuhide said:

The PSP does make profit its practically all profit when they sell them. They sell at $220/£150(I think) and it costs about (this is a guess) $75/£37 because its been out 2years and it never cost that much to begin with.

Do you have a link or something to back up that claim? Cause your guesstimates sound far too kind. The PSP is not a cheap piece of machinery. I'd guess the DS Lite might cost 75 bucks to make. The PSP is at the least 120. It's a portable PS2 with WiFi ... not cheap. It's far from all profit. Whenever Sony talks about pulling in profit from the gaming division (usually offsetting the debt PS3 brings), I don't think I ever hear them attribute it to PSP sales.

@FishyJoe - Haha, sure it makes sense. Actually wait... what's the very opposite of makes sense... oh: makes absolutely no sense.

It's like ceres was saying above, Sony loses more money on consoles they don't sell; once a console is made, they've paid for it. Period. Not selling it means they can't even put that $600 against the manufacturing costs, not to mention that it gives Sony a smaller install base from which to sell the software that is supposed to cover the remaining hardware manufacturing costs and after that start making the company some actual profit. God, I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

From the article: "The PS3 'sales figure was somewhat weaker than our target but we still believe that the main battle is still ahead of us,' Sony's chief financial officer, Nobuyuki Oneda, told reporters."
I like the word "somewhat" in there. It's cute. If that .7 mil figure is anywhere near their target, they need to get a better target. He's right about the battle still being ahead, though.

"'Sales of the PS3 have risen but we booked losses due to our strategic decision to price it below the (production) cost,' said Oneda."
I've always seen it written as a "strategic decision," not just a "decision." Again, cute. In what sense was it a "strategic" decision to sell the PS3 below its production cost? Who would have paid for a PS3 if it was priced such that Sony was making a profit off each individual console? Anyone want to pay $1000+ for a PS3? Or was it "strategic" in the sense that they planned on selling more consoles at that "lower" price and thereby secure a larger install base from which to make their profit on software. If so, remind me why its good that they've sold less hardware.

"'We will see more game titles as we head into the Christmas season. Software developers will continue to use the PS3 as an important platform to which they are committed,' said Oneda."
You're kidding, you mean you plan to have MORE PS3 games come out in the future? My faith is restored. Also, what inherently makes the PS3 "an important platform"? And if 3rd parties jumping ship is a sign of commitment to the platform, everything I know is wrong.

Yeah, overall I'd say this is more hilarious than stupid.

Prediction: Wii passes 360 in US between July - September 2008. (Wii supply will be the issue to watch, and barring any freak incidents between now and then as well.) - 6/5/08; Wow, came true even earlier. Wii is a monster.

Supporter of

 SONY & Nintendo

Consoles owned - SNES, N64, PS, GC, PS2, PSP, PS3

 I DO NOT support Xbox

My prediction for YEARS END:

WII - 18.3 Million

Xbox 360 - 15 Million

Playstation 3 - 8.5 Million

Well it does make profit maybe not as much as i said cause they are just guesses but i wouldnt put it far from that and the PS2 doesnt cost that much to make seeing as it costs $130 in the shops and that is all profit but yes i will agree the PSP probably does cost more to make than i guessed but it still makes abit of profit.

End of 2014 Hardware Predictions (03/03/14)

PlayStation 4: 12-15million

Xbox One: 7-10 million

Wii U: 8-9 million (Changed 01/04/2014 from 7-9 --> 8-9 million)

"Actually, because the number of units sold was not as high as we hoped, the loss was better than our original expectation,"

I don't see anything wrong or funny with this quote, he says the truth and its funny?

"The Next generation doesn't begin until WE say it begins"

That was a great quote, and its the truth :p

More like Stupidest whine about sony thread.

Personal favorites include (these are paraphrases, because I really don't want to dig through a year's worth of game news to find the exact quotes):

- You should get a second job to buy the PS3.
- The PS3 is actually being sold far too cheap (true, but almost insulting to the consumer)
- 6 million consumers will buy the PlayStation 3, at launch, even with no games.
- Five hundred ninety-nine...
- Geared toward the family or group, not the individual (a really awkward stance for a video game console)

See. It's threads like this that cause people to come up with assumptions of the userbase of this site. Not trolling of picking a fight, just pointing out how it can be construed that way.

No matter the company, when it comes to financial information try to spin everything in the best way possible. Here's an example of how a company like Nintendo may have spun information. Nintendo could have said that the reason why our 3rd party sales are so dismal is because Nintendo has the most popular 1st party games that get teh Nintendo user base busy and not have time to try out those 3rd party games. Or that they really really love Mario and want all of their games to involve Mario and that they are giving the customers what they want.

Microsoft could spin things on the RRoD issues about how they have solved the problem by offering a 3 year warranty.

Heck, we all know that Wal-Mart spins information when they report that profits are down 10% from expectations, but they increased revenue by x%. Don't even get me started on the Oil companies spin tactic. No matter the corporation, they spin the data to shed the best possible light on the situation.

To me that will be the worst ever. The bigger the DS gets the more crazy that statement looks. Its just ridiculous.
