First off: Year One. Second: Sandman kicks the holy living dog Hell out of every Batman story Frank Miller ever wrote. Frank Miller writes pulp. His works are not the height of the medium. His best work, which is arguably literature, is Ronin. Which is stomped by V for Vendetta, Moore's run on Swamp Thing, the original Sentry series... I could go on. |
I'm not a big Sandman fan, but I agree 100% on Miller.
It's funny to hear everyone prop up Miller when 90% of the people around didn't know who he was before Sin City. TDKR is some of his best work, but he's a genre writer (and not one of the best, at that). And I've read Miller stuff since his run on Daredevil over 20 years ago. That's where I first became a fan.

Well, I'm not going to knock his Daredevil stuff, he basically legitimized that character.
Did the same thing with Wolverine.
But come on, calling him better than Alan Moore is a travesty. That's not even getting into other big hitters like Will Eisner.

No stake in the eye? All right then. Also: both lists are in alphabetical order. Also, Time's list only includes novel length works. Sandman is too long to be on the list. |
I'd like to take this moment to point out one huge fucking omission named Maus.
It's almost as if that list felt obligated to throw in one traditional superhero book to make things look good.
Then they had to trim it down to one Moore piece so he didn't overwhelm the top 10.

It is. He can't hold a candle to Moore. He's not even on the same level as Ennis during Preacher. Gaiman is also better overall.
I'm not knocking Miller, I'm a fan. I'm just being honest with who he is and what he writes. It's pulp.

Also I'm going to say that Brian K. Vaughan is better than Frank Miller, if only for the beginning of Y: The Last Man and the insurmountable Pride of Baghdad.
@rocketpig
Thats exactly when i became a Miller fan also,and still believe Born Again is one of the best story arcs within a running series, but still, DKR holds it own against Sandman or Watchmen, even though Miller's writing skills are not at par with Gaiman or Moore. A big reason for that is Batman, and a peep into the kind of future he has been unwittingly creating for himself. Its no work of art, but i'll be damned if its any less entertaining or memorable than the others mentioned.

I also enjoyed TDKR as much as The Watchmen. The difference is that I'm not going to prop up Miller for being an inferior writer and letting Batman & Superman hold together the book while Moore dug his Watchmen characters out of the recycle bin and wrote a great story around nothing.
Take Batman out of TDKR, lose that emotional baggage, and you've got a pretty mediocre piece.

Entertaining? Maybe. I'd make an argument, but it's a point that can be let go.
Memorable? I dunno. That's a bit harder to swallow. There's a reason I own the Absolute editions of both Watchmen and all the Sandman volumes released so far.
