Forums - Sales - help me, I can't still understand the reason why wii is selling so much

I ve always dedicated my life to videogames. Since the very late 70s and early 80s, videogames have filled every night of my existence. I still have in my house an intellivision, a magnavox, a vic 20, a commodore 16, a commodore 64 and 128, a spectrum 48k, many pcs, an Amiga 2000, a playstion1, ps2, a dreamcast and now a ps3. I think I can be considered an hardcore gamer..

I must admit that i ve never liked nintendo brand and all that kind of games, but i ve always appreciated some games like zelda and mario.

But now, it is for me i.mpossible to understand why wii is selling so much. I tried and tried againg to understand what's happening in these years but unfortunately I 'm not able to undestand why someone has fun with nintendo wii.

Maybe i'm becoming old (i am 35) but it's hard for me to enjoy myself with a console with that graphic, with those title (i hate wii sports)...and i'm disappointed bacause maybe i'm losing something important of this generation.

i'm very enthusiastic of my ps3..I can play some good games (in this period mgs4, wipeout, fallout3, lbp) i can watch blu ray (on my 52" lcd it is spectacular) i can use internet in my sitting room, i can listen music and watch all my 5000 photos on a big screen.. Now i'm waiting killzone, resistance, Re5...and i think the future will be brighter..

but when i see my nephew playing with her wii, i still continue to not understand...maybe if I were 7 years old and I lived in the 80s, wii would be a fantastic console...unfortunately almost 30 years have passed.

so what's wrong with me?

The bolded and underlined is why you're confused.  Life wouldn't make sense to me either if I witnessed that.

I'm going to have to agree with the other posters and say that the Wii is FUN.  Then again, I've always found Nintendo consoles and games to be fun.  I love the new experience with the Wiimote but I find their core franchises to be as  awesome as when I first played them on the SNES.

I'd address the graphics comment you made but others already have.

How to identify a PS3 fanboy. They say:
"wii is for kids"
and one day...
"omg little big planet awesome beyond words"

Little out of topic, I know, but people saying wii is selling just for kids pisses me off beyond reason.

I personally don't count the wii as next gen. I count it on being on it own different level. Personally I don't like it to much besides ssbb but I think its all a big fad unless you are a little kid.

If you ask me, none of the companies deserve success this gen. Nintendo abandoned their fans (you should be GRATEFUL we give you three first party games in one year, one of which is a virtual gym and one of which is... Wi Music), Sony made several wrong decisions and Microsoft bought game publications (not just fanboy ranting, go look at Variety. Microsoft has a deal with them)

I've got to ask what you consider that third game to be

Is it warioland, animal crossing wii, mario kart wii or smash bros brawl?

I was wondering the same thing.  Can't be mario kart or smash bros because if you include one you have to include the other. so must be animal crossing (wario land isn't popular enough).

Many people have touched on this, but is had to do with the difference with hardcore vs non-hardcore players.

The hardcore player cares about graphics. They buy 2-3 games per month and buy the latest game on its release date. This is their primary hobby and they put a lot of time and money into it. This is the category that you fall into.

The non-hardcore also likes games, but they have other primary hobbies, do not care about graphics as much, and just want a game to be fun. These include new gamers, casual gamers, most female gamers, young and old gamers. They do not want 40 hour hardcore JRPGs or 10 shooters a year. They want to play something fun when they have the time or when friends come over. (The Wii sports and guitar hero crowd)

The non-hardcore gamers VASTLY outnumber the hardcore gamers.

In previous generations, the non-hardcore and hardcore were buying the same systems (Playstation 1 & 2). That was where all the games were going and it was cheap.

This generation, Sony and MS made systems specifically geared towards the hardcore. Nintendo made a system geared towards everyone else. Now Sony and MS are both trying to appeal beyond the hardcore, but the Wii has an almost unstoppable mindshare in the public that will be hard to overcome.

It seems like you chose the correct system for you tastes. You should stop worrying about what other people are buying, and enjoy the system you own.

I don't think we can rule wario land out because it's not popular enough. Infact, I think the third and final game released by nintendo this year might be

Battalion Wars 2 in Europe

Captain Rainbow - japan

Disaster:DoC - Japan, Europe

Donkey Kong Barrel Blast - Europe

Donkey Kong Jungle Beat - Japan

Endless Ocean - America

Everyone's Common Knowledgee television - Japan?

Fatal Frame IV

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn - Europe

Link's Crossbow Training - Japan

Mario Super Sluggers

Metroid Prime 3 - Japan

Pikmin 1 - Japan

Trauma Centre - New Blood - Japan and Europe

Wii Chess

Oh yeah, and Brawl, Kart, Wii fit, Wii Music, Animal Crossing, Wario Land

You know what? of the above games, I see 14 that I own or wish to own. Ninty's development studios seem to be doing very well

I was referring to Brawl, but damn, I forgot about Mario Kart. Okay, I'll count Wario Land as well. And Animal Crossing.

Why the hell are people ranting? Core gamers have plenty of core games!

It pisses me off to no end too. As well as the "if you want complex games you buy a PS360" argument.

 * The Wii has lots of party games so let's generalize and say Wii only has simple games that'll prove my point, I'm such a great debater *

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
