Great list, totally agree with number one!

I especially love the total lack of NES and near total lack of SNES games, also FF7 being #1, lol!

I usually do not weigh in on opinion lists. The reality is that different players have different tastes, and no two lists will be identical. Often enough they will not even be close depending on how different the tastes are.

However I second the first criticism that no title in the Zelda series belongs on that list. The series is an action adventure series, and no title in the series has anything remotely definable as leveling. Collecting heart containers or having a rarely seen magic bar does not constitute leveling. Both are increased through collection of items, or arrival at a location. Neither comes from accumulating experience.

Further more World of Warcraft should not be included within this list either. This is a massive title which means it is a persistent service. That means the game is in perpetual fluctuation. Whether you like the game or not when the servers are down the game is by default a zero, because it is quite obviously not playable. You can hardly compare a movie with television in general. One is a service and one is a specific. these titles are only qualifiable in respect to one another.

Technically these titles are never actually finished they are a work in progress. When one discusses one of these titles seriously they often must refer to a iteration of the game. A specific point in time during the games lifetime. The rule sets are always in fluctuation. You really cannot fix these titles with a set value. I have played these games for years. At times I was highly impressed with them, but when changes occurred that I disliked my estimation of them would take a terrible hit. Can you have a game that is both a plus ninety, and a meager ten.

The true irony about World of Warcraft is that it enjoys the same fate as all MMORPG titles. The game is destined to be the worst game on the market. Eventually the title will become tired, and most gamers will abandon the title except for a few fanatical loyalists that are content to go down with the ship. The developers will then perform radical surgery to try and draw gamers back in by appealing to their basest instincts. They will mangle and mutilate the title, break covenant with their loyal players, and in the end the last to play the game will be the most bitter of haters. Why does this happen well unlike a television serious or a movie series there is no incentive to stop at the top. There is only incentive to bleed every cent possible out of the title before it is killed off.

Are they the publisher of Gamepro magazine? because I remember Gamepro magazine were infamous for giving Xenogears a low score review back in the days... yet it's in their top 25 now?

uhh horrible list. But whatever to each thier own. but imo they got FFVII right. No game ever got to me emotionally like that one. Quit playing it for over a week after Aeris died. Fallout 3 to be determined...still playing it.

fallout 3 just came out. you can't throw a game just released on a top games list, you need to let it sink in. right there this list fails, number 5, thats crazy. also zelda games on an rpg list...fail. WoW #2...fail. no ffIV, ffVI, and secret of mana...ultimate fail, all three of those games should be in the top 10 automatically.

Great, now every time I come into this thread I'll see that boxart...the boxart of my most hated game of all time

That's hilaroius... would you hate it as much if it weren't loved by others? Or in other words, is it the overrated-ness a big factor? That's sort of how I feel about some things... the second and third LOTR movies in particular.

OT: The list blows. Like always, the typical FF7 on top placement I disagree with, but that's far from what makes me puzzled about this. I could pick the list apart, but certain games hooked my interest in particular - the western RPG's put in here seem... forced? Fallout 3, Warhammer Online (didn't even know this came out), Elder Scrolls 4, and Mass Effect are all games that came out quite recently. Makes me wonder if they really deserve their place in the 26 best RPG's of all time.

What score did they give it?  What were the pros and cons listed in the review, if there are any?

Well, maybe I wouldn't have even played it, because I (and I always said this) played it after seeing Gamespot's 9.0. Maybe you're right, I played the game expecting it to be good and it was horrible, while for example, I played Halo expecting it to suck (I did because a promise I had made), and it sucked, so I didn't feel disappointed. Yeah, maybe it increases my hate a bit. Still, I think I would hate it even if it were one of the worst rated games of all time...like it should be

The fact that Final Fantasy VII is not only on their list but listed as number 1 is a testament to how atrocious their list is. Now if it was a list of overrated games then FFVII deserves to be number 1.
