Remember the guy who denied a price cut was coming at all like 2 days before it was announced?

'Nough said. They won't say more price cuts are coming till they are on the verge of arriving soon after.

Once the 60Gig model sells out, they obviously need to do something. The backlash of having the (effectively) price go up $100 - will be too horrible to contemplate.

Sony is well-known lately to say one thing then retract, then say it again, then retract again.

As far as I'm concerned this is just a cat-and-mouse game that Sony and Microsoft are playing - one to gain second place, the other to maintain second place. Neither one can afford a price cut but without one, them consoles ain't sellin'!

I have no hurry to buy either system, as my PC delivers the "hardcore" gaming I enjoy at the moment. Besides, this could turn out into a super price war where both Sony and Microsoft lose - but us consumers win! Yay!

Christmas this year will be the BOMB.

They'll be saying "no price cut" even if there's a massive ad leak. And even after it's announced, some Sony representative will still deny it due to not noticing the news is out already.

That said, I don't expect that a model cheaper than $499 will exist this Christmas. Unless those 40 GB PS3 rumours have any truth to them, which is not impossible but would look a bit ridiculous.

Sony is actually between a rock and a hard place this generation, only so many people are going to buy a system for more than $300 but too many large price cuts (combined with lower sales) does not really encourage people to buy your system.

What do you you want them to say? 

"We're going to drop the price of the 80GB PS3 to $500 right after we sell out of 60GB PS3s.  Buy them up!"

They are not thinking about not dropping the price again.  This wasn't even thread worthy...

Microsoft is saying they aren't going to drop their price as well, but does anyone believe they will never do it?  Of course not.  As others have said, you can't announce you are thinking about a price drop.  You announce price cuts.
