DVD sales according to Neilson Vision a few months ago is starting to flatline because of HD-DVD and Blu-ray sale.

 They can't prove that...I'm guessing DVD sales are decreasing lately because of rental services becoming cheaper and easier.

I mean...I've only bought 2 DVDs in the past 6 months...my friends and I have rented dozens upon dozens of DVDs from Netflix or our local stores though.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

@dallas -

Haha, well yanno maybe if they sacrifice enough goats, the God of War will descend and force the population to adopt Blu-Ray. Sony may need some divine intervention on their side these days.

Prediction: Wii passes 360 in US between July - September 2008. (Wii supply will be the issue to watch, and barring any freak incidents between now and then as well.) - 6/5/08; Wow, came true even earlier. Wii is a monster.

 umm Neilson Visions is 100% more reliable then the NDP when it comes to their numbers. The cited rentals picking up some but not effecting numbers at the same levels as the HD Formats. And remember rental retailers do have to buy the discs inorder for you to be able to rent them.

They still sell Xbox 360's HD-DVD player, HD-DVD movies and in their website they sell Toshiba players, so...

@BenKenobi88 - Very good point. Certainly could be the case. I don't rent many movies but many people I know do, now with Netflix and Blockbuster's Total Access having made it so convenient.

 Hes not questioning their numbers hes saying that the lurking variable of increasing rentals is increasing the apparent effect of HD sales on DVDs where the actual effect may be significantly lower.

I have to stop listening in stats.

Also rental retailers buy a dvd once and rent it out many times rather than that dvd being bought once so it does lower the amount of dvd sales significantly.

I haven't bought a DVD in a long time due to online rentals.  Doesn't mean I'm wasting my money on Blu-Ray or HD-DVD though.  I think Ben has a good point and it's more likely the cause of the drop in DVD sales.
