after watching the gameplay video on PSN - I feel confident that this game will be amazing.
I'd wager the gameplay is fairly similar, with new tools and mechanics (Like barrel rolling. If only Peppy made a cameo). Also, according to the 15 minute video, a FPS mode. But that's kinda the thing about stealth games, there's some very basic mechanics that don't change much from game to game, with different tweaks, tools and skills.
And those who like those games will definitely like metal gear. Even if story can concentrate a lot on genes instead of subterfuge and nuclear war, which one would really expect. Sometimes I think Kojima spends all his time taking genetics classes.
Plus, Snake can now cockpunch! Truthfully, I'm expecting an improvement on gameplay in a game that's already credited as very good, so if it was crappy before in one's opinion, I doubt that will change, but if it was mediocre or higher in your opinion before, it'll be better now.

Once again, if we had not seen gameplay, his story might have credibility. But the game really does look like it went out of its way to overhaul things. It isn't the same old Metal Gear.

Everybody has their opinions. I think Halo is pointless, but I know many who think otherwise so whatever.
Personally, I'm really excited for this game. Except for the fact that MGS2 was difficult to understand near the end, Hideo Kojima has done a great job on his games and I've enjoyed them all (except for Twin Snakes, but that was done by Silicon Knights and not by Kojima).

MGS outsells MP in every region. In fact the lowest selling MGS game sells almost equal to both MP games worldwide combined. US sales for Metroid Prime are good but not through the roof in comparison to other games, including MGS.
Even if you add the old Metroid games, that were more popular in Japan as you pointed out, MGS is still a bigger series. MP is the best seslling Metroid game ever even though it did poorly in Japan.

It was kind of an argument starter, but Halo is similar to the OP's opinion on the Metal Gear Solid series. Some people may think "X" is stupid and overrated and others wont.
All opinion. . . just put in a way that says "come fight me!".
I totally agree. Apart from Gears of War, this has got to be the most overrated game (series) in history. The cut scenes in MGS2 were just ridiculous. Splinter Cell is everything Metal Gear should be. I just finished Double Agent for the 360, and THAT is a brilliant game. From start to finish, the game was just wonderful. Metal Gear, not so much.
