Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Will Nintendo release the balance board separately?

Considering the massive sales of Wii fit, and the relatively small fraction of the price that the disc represents, one would be quick to assume that the Wii board will forever come only packaged with Nintendo's fitness software. However, as more and more games (both first and third party) that utilize the peripheral are released, might it not make sense for Nintendo to release the balance board as a stand alone for slightly cheaper?

The main reason for thinking this is demographics. There are probably people out there who are quite interested in Shaun White Snowboarding and Skate it for it's balance board utilization, but aren't interested in Wii fit. Even if the price difference would be small, the phsycological barrier of making that 90 dollar purchase with a game you don't want to just to be able to get the most out of the games you do might prevent some people from buying any of those games.

Or would Nintendo be best to offer some other Balance board bundles? A Shaun White/Balance board bundle would probably attract a fair bit of attention, as might future games that utilize it (Punch Out!! or a Time Crisis).

To be honest, I don't know if Nintendo will ever release the peripheral stand alone for on the shelf retail, but I think it might be beneficial to reaching wider demographics if they did.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

well i don't think that poeple who want shaun white, skate, rayman ect. are too worried about getting wiifit with the board. Heck if i was getting those games or a game that used the board I would want wiifit as well. might as well.

But if games use more than one board, such as multiplayer in those games or the party aspect of the game ect. Then be nice to not have to have mutliple wiifits, and jsut buy the board. what do you think the cost of each is. You think 20 dollars for wiifit and 70 for board or what

It'd certainly be beneficial, and I'm positive that Nintendo's always planned to release it without a game at some point. But right now, Wii Fit remains supply-constrained precisely because they can't pump out Balance Boards fast enough: under those circumstances, they won't be releasing the board by itself until Wii Fit demand begins to be met.

@ irstupid - I think the Wii can only recognize one balance board, so multiple boards are out of the picture.

How many current and future games use the board anyways? The games I'm aware of are

Wii Music
We ski
We ski and snowboard
shaun white snowboarding
skate it
Rayman Raving Rabbids TV party.

Tetris Party

What else?

yeah, if they do, it wont be until a few more games come out that need it and Wii Fit sales drop

Don King's Prizefighter

That Julian-Whatever fitness game

Wii Move

Babiez Party

G1 Jockey

All-Star Cheer

Probably one or two more.

I would assume they will always sell the board with Wii Fit. Much like Wii Play, it's like a demo for the pheriphal, even though everyone uses WiiRemotes. I wouldn't expect any change. It is Nintendo after all.
