Forums - General - Do Americans care for who their president is?

I've seen in the news that around 125 million people are going to vote on this presidential election...

That makes something like 2 out of 5 which is a around a 50% of the population...

Don't you think it's a bit low?

Here in Spain, where we've had elections since 1978 for the first time (since Second Republic in 1936, then dictatorship came on 1939 after Civil War) we average a participation of the 75%.

Shouldn't USA lead that classification seeing they always say they fight for democracy?

Your mistake is that you count out of all people.

Somewhere around 25% aren't even old enough to vote. And as it is in the winter, a lot of old people might not bother voting, in Norway, that equals almost 10% of the population (people not voting due to problems getting there).

So in all, roughly 1/3 people should be unable to vote due to other reasons than that they don't want to. This means that around 200 million people can vote, and if your 125M number is true, then that means that 62.5% vote. I think I recall that in western Europe that number is at around 70%, but that doesn't account for people who cannot get there, so I think it's pretty close (with western Europe a bit higher than Americas).

Yeah, I mistook the 2 out of 5 but it doesn't matter... With 300M people, 200M can easily vote... 125 out of 200 it's way too few people...

125M is this year, which is said to be a record... Dunno where I read it (somewhere in the net)...

I completely agree that far too few people vote. My point was that it is like that in Europe too.

Zimbabwe is good though. 120% of the country's population voted.

You have to factor that several aren't able to vote because of age, criminal history or disability.  I'm sure a large chunk of the three hundred million Americans can be factored out because of this.

OT: you can sum it up in one word: apathy. It's a damn shame Americans don't care who leads them. (and yet they still gripe about the government all the time....)

Not trying to be a fanboy. Of course, it's hard when you own the best console eve... dang it

It's not winter yet, there has been snow last week in the north eastern states but it's all gone now. So old people should be able to vote!

Signature goes here!

Americans are too concerned with buying new cars and watching America's Next Top Model to vote. Duh!

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Theres many reasons, mostly voter apathy. We care who our president is, just not enough to go wait in line to vote.

it could also be possible that people trust our govt system (with checks and balances).
And trust the people who run the govt as well.
It's almost impossible to have dictators and what not so people are not as concerned as other countries.

It could be.
