Quick aside: Aren't we in World war III right now? Hasn't the United States declared war on "Terrorism" wherever it is? which recently has included strikes in Syria and Pakistan?
Anyways, If there's a third World War, it will be over oil. I can think of no resource (although the U.S. is starting to run out of water in some parts, but they'll just force Canada to start selling them ours) or cause that could lead to another world consuming war.

There was an episode of "Spooks" on a while back which is a TV show based around MI5 (UK internal intelligence agency), which concerned a dossier that outlined a plan for the US and UK to act out, when oil stocks ran dry, which basically surmounted to invading oil rich countries and claiming the oil there, which I think could happen. It's certainly plausible enough.
However, I agree with the Einstein quote, nukes will most likely wipe out most civilisation.
It really doesn't matter.
If US was on one side, inevitably China or Russia would be on the other. Eventually nukes would be used. We would all be doomed.

The only thing I left out is what Russia will be doing during all of this. Who's side would they take. The Chinese? Nato? pft...probably not... M.A.D. anyone? |

The Great Lakes hold 1/5th of the world's fresh water supply.
I doubt the US or Canada are going to be seriously clamoring for water any time soon. The US southwest buys some water from Canada currently but if things became desperate, there are other sources to turn to.

Article V stipulates that NATO members do not have to respond unless a fellow NATO country is attacked. This is why other NATO nations did not have to aid the UK during the Falklands War. The situation most likely to escalate into a World War is anything involving Israel and other West-Asian nations. I suppose the conflict over Kashmir could escalate, but I see that scenario as less likely.
