and to answer your question, Gran Turismo5

You sure GT's high sales of the past weren't just because of install base?

If Japan is any indication, yes.

(old post: http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/post.php?id=1364717)

Key point: Gran Turismo in Japan sold 1.7mil copies when the PS2 userbase was at 5.6mil. Gran Turismo breaking 6mil is assured. I don't think any other currently announced games will sell that high - it's possible GTAIV and GT will be alone up there. Sony doesn't have any huge franchises besides GT, obviously they've been trying to change that. I honestly don't think they're capable of doing it, though. Their games are usually too generic (not that I don't enjoy them, but it won't stand up in sales).

I hope for the best for gt5. I certainly give sony credit for trying to improve their 1st/2nd party offerings. I won't say their games don't sell on par because they are generic because I think something like KZ2 would easily sell 6 mil if it was a 360 game.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

Yeah, I suppose that's where I disagree. While shooters do sell well on the 360, the big sellers all had something going for them. Halo is the party game, Gears of War had its own unique style (the art, violence, third person), and CoD4 filled the Counter-Strike demand (modern setting, quick kills, realism). Killzone 2 doesn't seem to have much setting itself apart from these games - as a 360 game I'd put it at 4-5mil lifetime, max. Gears of War is just over 5mil, and it has much more going for it.

I haven't played KZ2 yet so I really can't argue with your opinion but I have played gears, Halo and cod4 so I suppose I could make a clearer judgement when KZ2 releases.

Saying that the Ps3 will sell a racer well is odd. Racers have sold well on all consoles. If you look at it, we're likely to see something ala

Ps3 best selling racer: 8-10M

X360 best selling racer: 5-6M

Wii best selling racer: 15M +?

So that isn't something that the Ps3 is likely to do extraordinary.

But I wouldn't say the 360 is extraordinary in anything either. Look at the top 10 titles for both consoles.

Ps3 has 2 sandbox - Assassin's Creed and GTA IV

2 racers, GT5:P and Motorstorm

2 online FPS - Resistance and Call of Duty 4

2 3rd person shooter - MGS 4 and Uncharted

1 music game - Guitar Hero

1 Sports Game - Pro Evo 08

And X360

2 online FPS - Halo 3 and CoD 4

2 sandbox games  - AC and GTA IV

1 Racer - Forza 2

1 sports game - Madden 08

1 - 3rd person shooter - Gears

1 Music game  - Guitar Hero 3

1 Role-Playing game - Oblivion

1 other game - Marvel Alliance

I would actually say that the X360's top sellers are more diverse than for the Ps3, or that it's at least a tie.

Firstly, those LBP "sells" were confirmed as week "0 (zero)", meaning they don't count. We will see the real first week of sells coming up soon.

Secondly, I can't say which "type", because really there isn't a "type" to define PS3 with. I could agree that it's considered the "jack-of-all-trades"

As for titles that will sell, GT5 and GoW3 are definite buys and system sellers no doubt about it.

Aslo, with all the hype for Killzone 2, it will be a system seller.

I can see Heavy Rain selling a system here and there, I wouldn't exactly call that title a system seller, but it will be pretty well hyped if Sony markets it.

Those are just 4 titles (not including LBP) that will be pretty big sellers (system or not) for PS3 owners.

None of those games will be system sellers.

It does sell soccer games more than other platforms but in no way  do it's soccer sales stand out. By stand out, I mean Halo, Gears, SMG, SSBB, COD4 (360)-type sales

Fps.They seem to sell greatly.
Assassins Creed and Devil May Cry kind.
Racing is biggest.

Take my love, take my land..

I think the OP has a good question.

He's not asking what games have sold well, he's asking what sort of games sell well on a playstation no matter what?

Shooters generally sell well on the 360.

Nintendo is known well for their Mario's, Zelda's, Pokemon's.

What do Sony platforms always sell well? I think your Jack-of-all-Trades bit speaks true, because Sony's first two systems have had such a high userbase that ANYTHING could sell well.

If I had to put my finger on one such thing, I would say 3rd person adventure games normally do well on Sony systems, no?

Racing and FPS.
