Forums - Sony Discussion - BREAKING NEWS!- SONY Issues Break Apart Controller PATENT! - PICS INCLUDED!

IF this is real, I am wondering if it more "Throw functionality in to a patent we will never make to limit options of other companies" than "'Innovation' (replication) for our own use"

fake, no patent would go into such detail as including a ps3/eyetoy. you write patents to be as general as possible not narrow.

Looks weird, and what's with the ball at the end of the controllers?

@kizmos

no no....its meant to be like that

their joined.....then you split them n use one in each hand

Wow, so much to say

First, they seem to be expecting to get motion control from a webcam? That only works for 2d games, and even then, only vaguely Webcam for face/body tracking, not motion control
Second, worst button placement ever. Agreed
Third, balls? Agreed
Fourth, Why do they connect together like that? It will be necessary in 0 games and makes the button placement even more painful Who knows? maybe a racing game of some sort?
Fifth Its apparently for the PS3, which means it's a ludicrous as the rumoured Newton. Games would be made for the conventional controller and then ported, because otherwise you're cutting out millions of potential buyers Probably

Lawsuit, check Nintendo's patents first Sony. Looks big and bulky - first impression

AHHHHHHH, I know why theres 2 balls. If anyone knows about motion capture and how they use tennis balls and clothing with lights and balls attached on the clothing in order to measure distance and movement etc.
Each ball is measured seperately and thats how the angle, speed and trajectory is measured / calculated.
Secondly its clear that the users face, chest (or tits, fig.10) and ball controller is measured. Like how modern digi cameras measure distance, faces, etc same deal with this, closer u move to camera the closer your character moves.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

this one by far looks the worst, and why so many bad/replicated designs.

I think Sony should looking for something else instead of making a wiimote-like controller like this.Something that really can call innovative instead of improving.

I got a feeling that in next 1-2 gen. Nintendo will make another big innovation for controller again.

But actually ,a better controller than original always welcome. :)

If you're right, that's pretty genious.

Still looks pretty funny though
