How is this impressive? No-one would've predicted this at the beginning of this gen. 24 million XBOX vs 140 million PS2 and this is all the PS3 can do? You would've been laughed at if you even suggested this 2-3 years ago. Now, everyone thinks it's doing well because it's selling "comparatively" better. Keep lowering your standards folks.

i think people have forgotten that sony can cut the price too when its neccessary.

It's not the most expensive console ever released.  Unless you don't adjust for inflation for some goofy reason.

I want to say it's the Neo Geo but i'm pretty sure that's not right.

I don't think the price point was directly Sony's choice , it was the end result of cramming the Blu-Ray , Cell technology into the PS3 I don't think Ken Kutaragi woke up won morning and said "let's make the most expensive console known to man" .

the crazy success of the PS2 , the potential royalties of a succesful blu-ray , the marketability of new "cell" technology and it would have apearthat the PS3's archictecure was a no brainer.

I think kowenicki's point is relevant to this and all other threads on the forum.  Some people on this forum are so biased in favour of their console of choice that they cannot give praise to the competing product even when it is well deserved.

@ kowenicki: let's be fair in one regard: the PS3 launched in three stages, no wonder that a console is going to keep up / get more headstart when the opposing console is only launching in two markets of the three...

No it was the Neo Geo.

The Neo Geo adjusted for inflation just cost under $1,000.

Oh also the 3DO cost $699.99.  So even if you don't adjust for inflation it wasn't the most expensive.

I think people are also forgetting the extremely rocky start the Xbox 360 had.

They could barely keep the market supplied for the first 6months/year on the market there were shortages everywhere.
