Please keep in mind blue jeans started out as a "fad" for industrial workers, as they proved to be very durable.

Anyone who thinks fads just burn out in a few months really knows little about trends and true "fads" as a whole.

Keep in mind, in regards to the blue jeans statement, we are talking about fashion of which Oscar Wilde said thus before the advent of the jeans no less:

"Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months."

If the Wii is a fad, I'm sure Sony and Microsoft wouldn't mind that their consoles were fads too...

This is what would be a fad to me:

Lets say the Wii starts going crazy, which it pretty much has, and sales 16m per year for the next three years. That would put it 48m, giving it a lead that wil not be touched. Now, after these three years are up we start to see a decline in sales. Something like 7-8m a year, for example. Lets use my highest number and go with 8m a year. That would put the Wii at 72m for 6 years. However, with a price drop by the PS3 to say, 249-299 with the HD user base being larger the PS3 sales start to do well; better then what the Wii would be doing at that time. For me, that would be a fad. There are 2 systems that I can think of right now that I would consoder fads. The PSP and Sega genisis.

On topic: It sounds all good from what's been planned for the WII but I hope there are a lot of good, core games.

I wouldn't call it disrespectful. It's honestly... a valid point, in a weird way. Though I don't think that would really qualify as a fad, particularly if that's enough to outsell the competition (if you're outsold by a fad over your lifetime, what does that make you?)

No it's not. The DS was not a fad, so why would the Wii? And even if it is a fad, it'll take longer for the fad to die out, than for the Wii to die out.
