Quite frankly, the 360 isn't selling well enough for poor PS3 sales to entice developers to go 360-only; software sales for The Darkness, for example, were only double on the 360 compared to the PS3, so for a 360-only version they would've lost one-third of their sales and probably not gained that many just by optimizing a bit better for the 360 or whatever benefits they get from being exclusive.
Honestly there doesn't seem to be any safe bets for publishers right now, there's a lot of different markets and a lot of different choices for where to bring games and what types of games to make. 360 only, 360/PS3 multiplat, 360/PS3/PC multiplat, Wii only, DS only, Wii/DS multi, PSP only, DS/PSP multi, Wii/PSP multi, and don't forget all the PS2 combos -- PS2 software sales are dying off but are still competitive with the current-gen consoles.
- If I was from EA I would destroy the company and make the video-game world a better place
Right. Gaming would be much better if games like Spore and Rock Band didn't have a huge publisher to fund and promote them.
Yes, EA has been over-reliant on 5 key franchises over the last gen (Madden, FIFA, MoH, NfS and Sims), but lets stop pretending they don't bring anything positive to the gaming world.
Anyways, I'd say that devs will remain wary of cutting PS3 SKUs, as 360 sales have been better, but not enough better. If the PS3 sales sucked while 360 was selling 250K+/month, that'd be one thing... It seems to me that publishers are going to want both versions, but they'll probably also want less overall PS3/360 games.
If either PS3 or 360 suddenly showed it was going to dominate the other, that's when we'd see one of them with tons of de facto exclusives. Right now those de facto exclusives are falling to Wii, and I think we'll start to see PS3/360 only game announcements slow down.
And we're seeing with Haze and UT3 a really strange trend, of PS3 getting timed exclusives. This is likely a combination of PS3's software drought, 360's low sales with plenty of software, and the feeling that games get more press if they're exclusives.
"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."
Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.
@The source,
It seems that some people have problems to understand who is who.
I was asking u to make a little edition of ur post but I have the impression u just have done it ?
About my comments:
Overall, I agree with TheBigFatJ comments,
- Do we think PS3/360 games are becoming 360 exclusives?
==> no, I dont think so or it will already be the case NOW
as Nonquihote stated "Ps3 user base is a increase of 36% numbers favor games staying 360/PS3"
- Who do you agree with more in reading the situation - N'Gai or Keighley
N'Gai.
- What would you do if you were a third party developer? I especially wonder about since EA is a company whose empire was built on the PC, Genesis, PS1 & PS2.
Developpe on all the plateform including Wii of course.
The big question is :
can we make multiplateform gaming Wii/Xbox360/PS3 ?
Will all the version be similar (PS3/Xbox360 not exploited) ? or will we release a Wii version with lower graphism ?
- PS3 sales will likely increase to around 130-160k in July, but 360 may still beat it, or sell comparably, and when the August-Dec rush begins 360 should go back to mopping the floor with PS3 in terms of sales (lower cost entry barrier for Madden, Halo, GTA).
==> I truly believe that this will happen in NA because the Xbox360 is strong and pricedrop+Halo3 will help a lot.
But in europe or japan, were Microsoft is still a newcomer, I think people still prefer the "old" playstation(3) brand name to the new unknow Xbox(360). So GTA4/PES2008 will help the PS3 sales (& potential price drop 100euros).
Remember it will be the first Xmas for the PS3 in europe.
Time to Work !
Yeah I wonder if this is the reason that third party devs are seemingly hesitant to embrace the Wii,
because of the fact that they know they'll get spanked by Ninty in the software market
Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!! It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!! Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! MS have screwed up completely. If they had their shit together, Sony could have been buried by now. But all they do is keep digging themselves a deeper hole, try to get out of it - stumble over their own feet - and end up in deeper.
The way things are going, Sony could do whatever they like - and MS would still end up non-competitive due to their own mistakes.
Its because of this that software support for the PS3 is not going to fade away. In fact, because both are generally "underperforming", its more likely to see more and more x-platform titles (to reduce risk).
...
Nintendo is running away with this generation, and leaving Sony & MS to fight between themselves for an increasingly small (and irrelevant?) portion of the gaming market.

Do you think that Sony and MS will roll out their next generation systems faster if it looks like Wii is reaching PS2 levels after a couple of years

To tell you the truth, that's why I bought my HDTV. Sure, a nicer picture is good, but I just wanted the bigger screen and something flat. The best thing I watch are DVD's and my cable/Tivo are all standard quality with a general fuzzy picture. |
Same here. Actually, I wanted to replace my 29" CRT with another CRT when it conked out on me because I knew that without HD content LCDs tend to make images look crappy, but finding a CRT is becoming increasingly harder here in Hong Kong.
Why then are LCDs and plasmas selling like proverbial hotcakes over here? Being the most densely-populated country on Earth, the apartment sizes are small - I live in a 750-ish sq ft apartment and it's the largest size you can rent on the island where I live. Understandably, flat panels are a godsend in such space-resticted living areas.
It's only now (as in last week) that HD content has been officially announced by one provider, but I can guarantee that a good percentage of the HDTVs that sold before the advent of HD content in Hong Kong was due to form factor rather than picture quality (which again, if you project SD content on an HD screen it looks far far worse than CD or HD content on a CRT).

This is basically what I believe as well.
