Forums - Gaming - If Xbox could run Doom3 & HL2 is it impossible Wii could run 360/PS3 games?

It's amusing for me that everyone comes and throws some random specs of consoles hardwares... most of them wrong... most of them pulled out from somewhere... most of them not even knowing what the tech specs mean... and stating all of them as facts... sheesh >_>

For the topic question, I say yes. Games from PS3 Xbox 360 are quite possible on the Wii... but with lot of differences.

1st: Resolution. Nintendo were no idiots to lock the Wii's GPU to 640x480. They knew they had to keep a relatively slow clock to keep shuch a compact form factor, and keep the internal components healthy. Resolution gives one of the biggest performance impacts on GPUs. 1920x1080 is a lot more for a GPU than 640x480. So with a lower resolution, you have free GPU for other things. Oh, and with lower resolution you don't need that 16x Anisotropic Filtering, because its no use.

2nd: Textures. Why would you need 2048x2048 textures when you have a screen of 640x480? You really will not notice the lower resolution of the textures just because of the lower resolution of the screen.

3rd: VRAM. Wii, just like Xbox 360 and PS3, has a 'mediocre' 128-bit memory interface to their GDDR3 video memory... with an unkown speed. AMD could just have thrown there a 1000 Mhz-effective VRAM without increasing the heat that much... and still, by considering the 1st and 2nd points, how much VRAM would you need?

4th: Storage: Ok, we just don't have those ultra-high resolution textures there... why would we need those Blurays and HD-DVD's?

So, the only thing the hypothetical Wii-ports would need to be toned down a lot, would be physics and AI. When you compare the 360's and PS3's CPUs to the humble Wii's... hell, you have a big difference there. But anyway... how importante is physics for the other console's games? ***cough cough*** Gran Turismo HD *** cough cough***

:P

You havent played motorstorm have you? I'm not sure if the Wii could do the physics done for it. It probibally could, but it runs some really cool physics/traction stuff for each of the 4 wheels, on 12 vehicles! Not to mention the AI is rather interesting.

Actually I ranted about Gran Turismo because I would like it to have Motorstorm's, DiRT, etc.... like physics, damage on cars that actually affects its performance, etc... but nah they say "manufacturers don't want to damage their cars"... yeah, right :(

Here is a list of cars that are either identical between Forza 2 and GT HD, or are close enough to be considered the "same" car model (some are variants or different homologations but the "stock" car from which the homologations are based on are the same):

  • Audi TT Coupe 3.2 quattro
  • Audi Johansson Motorsport R8
  • Audi Infineon Audi R8
  • Bentley Team Bentley Speed 8
  • BMW BMW Motorsport V12 LMR
  • Ferrari F430
  • Ford GT
  • Honda Integra Type-R
  • Honda NSX-R
  • Infiniti G35 Coupe
  • Lexus SC430
  • Lotus Elise 135R
  • Mazda RX-8 Mazdaspeed
  • Mazda RX-7 Spirit R Type-A
  • Mercedes SLR
  • Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI GSR
  • Nissan Silvia K's
  • Nissan Skyline Coupe 350GT
  • Nissan Fairlady Z
  • Nissan Skyline GT-R V-Spec II
  • Nissan Skyline GT-R V-Spec
  • Panoz Esperante GTLM
  • Peugeot Talbot Sport 905 EVO 1C
  • Shelby Cobra 427 S/C
  • Subaru Impreza WRX STI
  • Toyota MR-S
  • Toyota Celica SS-I
  • Toyota 2000GT
  • Toyota APR Performance Celica GTS
  • Toyota Motorsports GT-ONE TS020
  • Toyota Open Interface Tom's Supra
I agree 123% with you - Polyphony's "damage" claim is absolute tripe.

This is a pretty complex question, there is a resolution where higher pixel density is no longer helpful but thats only part of the picture. Frame rate becomes an issue also. The real question is what frame rate is required to make it look fluid? And the answer depends heavily on wether the game has blurring effects for fast moving objects since blurring gives the impression of fluidity to the eye. There are a ton of other things you can do to improve fluidity without improving frame rate but I am not sure what you would need for frame rate to make it irelevant or that there is such a point.

I think you're right on the money.  You can easily see the individual frames in a 24fps FPS but you can't notice with a movie.

It's all about the camera and blurring techniques that have always been a(n unintentional) part of moviemaking (it's just how film works) but are just starting to make their way into videogames.

I think that in the very near future we will see games (not necessarily FPS because framerates is still a major factor in who gets first kill) that look more realistic simply because they can sacrifice framerates in lieu of improved graphics thanks to these real-life rendering techniques. Essentially, with these techniques framerates are much less an issue.

What PS3/360 games are we talking about? I'm sure some games can be done on the Wii. For example, Gundam Crossfire. The Wii should be able to run that game. Something like Henvenly sword, a game has 1000 things on screen with their own AI's, could not run on the Wii.

Suppose which type of games would work are up for debate.

Remember the Rogue Leader games on Cube, there were tons of enemies being thrown about, albeit ones which were probably running on pretty basic AI, but then Wii is more capable than GC so theoretically you could make those same enemies quite a bit smarter.

I'd love to see what Factor 5 could do on Wii.

this is stupid..............................

NO, is the answer, the question wasn't "if they completely overhauled a PS3 360 game would it be possible on a Wii?"

what, now that we're sure that MGS4 isn't going to the 360, you're gonna argue that it's coming to the Wii, like I said stupid, just enjoy the damn thing, if not................... buy a PS3 :p

I find your posts to be needlessly antagonistic in my threads. You also claimed in another of my threads I 'was talking out my ass' in regards to PSP2000 having the same battery life as the origional yet seen no concession on your part when I posted a link which has since been proved correct by many sources.

1)Well D3 and HL2, the games I'm using for comparison, were completely overhauled for Xbox so why wouldn't I be implying the same treatment for PS3/360 games on Wii?

2)Who argued MGS4 would come to the Wii?

Please try to post in a more mature manner.

Only time will tell. I'm not foolhearty enough to claim such a thing must be true but it wouldn't surprise me to see many early 360/PS3 masterpieces showcase easily on the Wii.

Also, what certainty is there that MGS4 isn't going to the 360, did Kojima make a new baseless claim for PS3 exclucivists to cling to out of desperate hope?

I'm not trolling, I just think this is stupid, of course you can port any game to any console, you can do the same on PC games you can (try) play any game on almost any computer, results: low quality game play, poor graphics, low FPS, etc. So finally is not the same game, I just think this is stupid.
