Forums - Sony Discussion - SCEA $499 PS3 Boosts Sales 135% at Top 5 Retailers

"Sure, it's only been a couple weeks, but according to SCEA the PlayStation 3 has already benefited greatly from the new $499 price. The company said that sales jumped 135% at the top five retailers. And even before the price cut, PS3 sales were up 21 percent in June.

We're still awaiting June's official NPD results, but in the meantime Sony Computer Entertainment America has beaten NPD to the punch with some sales info for June and some preliminary figures for July based on internal data.

According to the company's internal tracking, PS3 sales increased by more than 135 percent at the company's top five retailers since the new $499 price was introduced back on July 9. Furthermore, during this two-week period, total PlayStation hardware sales increased by 161 percent, software increased by 15 percent and peripherals by 60 percent.

As for June, SCEA noted that the PlayStation brand "continued to exhibit solid growth evidenced by a 21 percent increase in total retail dollars generated year-over-year in North America with total sales of $393 million." PS3 sales grew 21 percent in North America, up from May's 98,469 units sold at retail (some quick math would show that a 21 percent increase yields over 119K). In addition, the PSP grew 31 percent year-over-year, selling 290,108 units. The PS2 did well for itself again as well, selling through 270,763 for the month.

"The new price on the 60 GB PS3, coupled with our very strong software showing from E3, is certainly paying dividends in terms of impressive sales across the board at retail," commented Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. "This jump in sales bodes very well for us heading into the fall as we launch an impressive arsenal of hardware and software, leading off with the new 80 GB PS3 in August along with the unveiling of highly anticipated games such as Lair and Warhawk. That will be followed by Heavenly Sword in September and six more exclusive first-party PS3 games in October, including Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction."

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

Interesting. It seems that the surge of PS3's being sold are merely for the BR. Sony was smart to market the 5 free BR movies with the purchases of their BR-Players. Who doesn't want a BR player that doubles as a computer...

As for the sales growth in June, I do believe every company will be spinning their sales growth, considering it was a 5 week period.

June looks good for PS family selling 679k of hardware, ps2 saving sce's ass overall like always.

the price cut is for the last two weeks so..

100K/5=20K

20x2+2x(20x2.35)=40+97=137K for July. I would expect around 160K for July TBH though.

These are US totals not including canada.
