Forums - Gaming Discussion - Digital Distribution...much closer to mainstream than most think

Meh. No way streaming is going to be anywhere near blu-ray quality in the near future.

I would hate digital distribution and all the streaming stuff while I can only use 17gb a month;

"Xbox 360 Digital Distribution vs. PS3 Bluray"  ?

lol, did I guess right?

No. It discusses the future possibilities of digital distribution and the advancements in technology being made today.

The thing is, digital distribution is the future. And Im sorry, going up to you TV without any other equipment and being able to watch any movie or show ever made within minutes is amazing. if someone doesnt think so, they are really ignorant or just not very bright.

This thread talks about the first steps being taken towards that reality. No one here is talking about bluray being replaced any time soon...

I agree with you that digital distribution is the future.....but not for a long time. You say that you would be able to watch ANY movie in MINUTES....now, obviously, DD has a long way to go before that

That's going to be the biggest hurdle to digital distribution. More and more internet service providers are instituting caps on data usage.

Nope.

Like Zucas said, too many stores make bucks off of Entertainment Blu-ray players, DVDs, Blu-Ray discs and the like.

It's the same reason why Gaming would never be the same way. Retailers would be out of business. I believe in a hundred years or so, this would be the most convenient, and especially when Fiber-optics are available everywhere, but in a place where some people are still (and can only) use dial-up, this is a definite no-go.

It's the same argument again and again, and people just don't want to see the light. Once Download speeds are vastly improved, Download caps go away (they're just starting), and retailers find a way to make money off of this, it won't happen. Think about how many movies or games are on DD but not on DVD? Not many, but then think about how many movies or games are on DVD but not DD? Too many to count. That's how it'll always be.

Sony is already very successful with digital distribution. They currently offer 6 retail games for download from the store. I'm sure other platform holders will begin to follow.

The quality of downloaded movies leave much to be desired. Blu-ray quality is far greater than DVD which is greater than downloaded movies. I think digital is the way to go, but it is still far into the future.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Just wanted to add that I am in no way, shape or form saying DD will replace hard media. However it will become more accessable and hence it will be maintream...

Netflix seems to be the only major player right now, not counting apple tv and xbox live. And if they succeed others will surely follow. Game rentals may be possible with DD soon...

Im sure no one thinks or would even like having worldwide domination of digital distribution but as long as the option is there...everybody wins.

I honestly think that digital distribution of movies and tv programming has a much bigger threat towards TV channels and video rental stores then bluray media as whole.

Edit - or what HappySqurriel said above

Coexistence is the key, as long as outside of metropolitan areas wide band will be rare and also because there will be always a consistent minority, enough to making the business profitable, liking physical supports. But as for threats towards traditional TV, I agree, right now, only the elders still really like TV, the younger generations, including up to people in their forties, are growing more and more tired of it, I know a lot of them that prefer to go dancing every evening instead of watching TV (now that smoking in indoor public places is forbidden, it's a lot healthier too, unless you drink as alpine troopers). And we talk about people very important for advertisers, old style TV could even suddenly die.
