Little Big Planet is actually my most anticipated Exclusive Non-Nintendo game, pretty much ever. It's the first game to actually take any of my interest away from Nintendo this generation, and the only exclusive game to ever do it (all the other games went multiplatform; Thief 3, Psychonauts, DDR) It's also the primary reason that I changed from bashing PS3 during its launch to rooting for it to catch up with 360 and pass it.
But I've been looking at the charts, and sure, PS3 is doing well, it's been consistently selling better than the 360 over the past year, but only by a little. Kinda worrisome, to be honest. Now maybe I'm late to the party, and even Sony fans have accepted a 3rd place at this point, but I honestly think this could make the difference. Could.
I have always looked at Little Big Planet as the first GOOD casual game for an HD console. Sure there's Viva Pinata on the 360, but that fell pretty flat in general. Little Big Planet has a huge amount of hype, and just with the Beta has already done some incredible things, but what impresses me most is that I can SEE the power of this console being used. I can accept and appreciate that LBP would not look as good on the Wii. At the same time, It's not this nitty gritty ugly complex "see the pores on their skin as they sweat and watch each drop of blood as they are shot" graphics. It's WHIMSICAL, yet still uses that graphical power, and they've been advertising this game from the very start.
So with the game launch coming up soon, I'm sorta marking this spot in the timeline for reference. All the other games for the PS3 have typically appealed to the people who already had or were planning to get the PS3 anyway, or were multiplatforms that left people going "I'll just get the cheaper 360 to play this game" etc. i think LBP is the only game I've seen that actually has teh potential to draw in fresh userbase.
But what if it doesn't? Or perhaps, what if it's just not enough? I don't see any game in the future that looks like it will actually give more than a temporary boost in sales, just like every other game that has come out already.
So what do people think? Does LBP actually have a shot at making a last difference in sales? or is it just going to be the typical "sales go up for a couple weeks, then everythign goes back to normal"?
I think it coudl go either way, but if LBP DOESN'T make a lasting difference, then I do't think any other game in the future is going to do it, which will leave Sony is pretty much locked at 3rd place.
Seppukuties is like LBP Lite, on crack. Play it already!Currently wrapped up in: Half Life, Portal, and User Created Source Mods
