Forums - Nintendo - George Harrison: Wii Hardware Revision 'Not Out of the Question'

Nintendo is not going to revise anything on the graphics hardware. That would BREAK backwards compatibility.

I'm sorry, but nothing Squrriel mentioned would break either backward or forward compatibility (and it's forward compatibility that's the issue BTW - backward is the Wii being compatible with the Cube, forward is the Wii being compatible with an eventual WiiHD).

And it would all definitely make current and future games (even N64 VC games, for that matter) look much better on HD - better than the absolute best HD scalers out there, actually.

Reality has a Nintendo bias.

Technically, I think the only thing the wii actually needs for HD resolutions is more Vram. If I recall correctly, the GC GPU was capable of 1080i, but no games ever used it. I think they had a build of Rogue Squadron that they ran at 1080i. Given this, Wii should be able to pull it off with only a minor hardware revision.

And I could almost kill for GC compatability in Wii mode. I think the only reason this isn't done is to keep homebrewers and hackers from getting at the Wii through GC action replay and the like.

Witty signature here...

Wii: 14 million by January  I sold myself short

360: 13 million by January I sold microsoft short, but not as bad as Nintendo.

PS3: 6 million by January. If it approaches 8 mil i'll eat crow  Mnn Crow is yummy.

With these results, I've determined that I suck at long term predictions, and will not long term predict anything ever again. Thus spaketh Crono.

"Who is losing gamers?"

Well, I didn't read the intere topic, but just to anwer this question, I know some plp that have both GC and N64 and they refuses to buy a WII because it is weak... they ARE loosing some plp, but for each one they loose they win other 20... you can't make the whole world happy...

Until the wii passes any of their past system sales they still have lost fans.

It is 1 million away from passing the GC total sales in Japan and selling 75-100K a week so it will pass it in about 3 months. It will pass its european total in about 4 months and in the US it will take about 1 year to pass(holiday bumps). So no they are not losing gamers

Can we all just ignore PS3owner until he has a "grown up" thing to say.

All that the WII needs, IMO, are more "better" games and not some cheap cash in party / casual games or yes.. they could loose a lot of gamers, even the new ones. As these type of games are fun for a moment but are getting bored soon.

@Shams, PS3 has also upscale updates via software updates for PS2 and even PS games, so why shouldn't that be possible for a upgrade WII?

Why can't people understand?

Nintendo can NOT upgrade the internal hardware for more power...they can upgrade it for streamlining, compacting, whatever...changing the functionality of anything internally would BREAK backwards compatibility.

If a Wii2 was released in a year or two, and it had a better graphics card and HD, all the people who own current Wiis would be screwed...you can't play Wii games on GC hardware, and you wouldn't be able to play Wii2 games on a Wii...it'd kill the Wii.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Benkenobi shouldn't you kick some people's tails around here?
