Forums - Microsoft - Why MS Fell Flat at E3: RE5 Was the Megaton

http://www.gameinformer.com/News/Story/200707/N07.0720.1230.26535.htm?Page=4

I just came across this and couldn't stop laughing at the lunacy of it -- I mean, we've all known RE5 was on the 360 for how long now?  Apparently MS forgot that they told us and it was supposed to be the big huge reveal at their E3 conference that got everyone all excited (the one 2008 game they talked about, remember?).  Not that the new trailer wasn't nice, but it didn't have quite the same punch.

Excerpt below:

GI: You’re obviously doing OK in the States, you’re doing great in Europe. Japan, you went in hard with it, you want to show them, “Hey, we’ve got you covered.” You made a splash with Blue Dragon, for sure.

Kim: We’ll do it again with Lost Odyssey.

GI: But those are two from one developer.

Kim: Yeah, but here’s the thing: I think one of the most important, subtle announcements at the Xbox 360 briefing is that Resident Evil is coming to Xbox 360. Yes, it’s from Capcom, who’s been a great supporter of us.

GI: But we knew that two years ago.

Kim: What?

GI: Resident Evil. It was shown at TGS two years ago.

Kim: No, but coming to Xbox 360.

GI: Yeah. It was at the press event.

Kim: I don’t think so.

GI: I’m positive. I was there.

Kim: Really?

GI: It was shown at both press conferences.

Kim: That RE5 was coming to…?

GI: Yep.

Kim: I’m going to have to confirm that. That was supposed to be the big announcement.

Holy shit you bastard I was just going to post this. This is the funniest exchange ever... what were MS thinking? Did they all collectively have amnesia?

'It was shown last year...'
'No but it's coming to 360'
'Yeah that was shown before'
'Oh. Well that was supposed to be the big announcement'

What a fuck up seriously... I hope for their sake that this guy is just talking out of his ass on this one and MS didn't really think that was going to be a big announcement.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

GI: Are you planning on making a big splash at TGS?

Kim: I don’t know. I don’t know about any third-party announcements that are being lined up there. I wouldn’t know right now, anyway.

GI: I meant first party.

Kim: No, not really. For us, again, I think you’re going to see the same messaging that we have at E3, which for us in Japan is about bringing our other content, our Western content, to Japan. Lost Odyssey has to be the big splash. Showing that it’s real, getting Sakaguchi-san up there—in the same way we did with Blue Dragon last year. He’s going to get up there and say, “Hey, this is my next masterpiece, I hope you like it.”

That dampens my TGS 360 expectations too. Where is Alan Wake, Fable 2 and Halo Wars? They gotta show 'em at TGS...

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

Yeah there's actually a lot of other information in that interview too.

Alright, MS should really fire Kim. At least if you can't say anything intelligent, don't make your company look like an idiot.

I wonder if they have anything for the Leipzig GC

If that was the case, Sony would pretty much have no one running the company.

Honestly, MS should back out of Japan, imo. They're not gaining any ground and the money they've probably handed out for games like Blue Dragon are unlikely to be recouped by US sales.

To cash in my CC rewards points for $300 in Circuit City gift cards to purchase a 360 or not: That is the question.

They didn't hand out money for Blue Dragon. Mistwalker is an MS funded studio, much in the vein of Bungie, so they pretty much paid for the development. They can easily recoup the loss if sales match or exceed the number in Japan.

On topic, there is a laugh fest on this going on at NeoGAF. I sincerely thought the interview was fake because of how clueless Shane was. Wowzers!

In related and not really surprising news, RE5 confirmed for the PC.

SPOnG: Two titles I mainly wanted to talk to you about today were Devil May Cry 4 and Resident Evil 5. What’s new in Devil May Cry 4? And, what was the thinking behind Resi Evil 5 being set in Africa, for example?

Keiji Inafune: Well, I’m overseeing production on those titles, as well as all Capcom’s other titles, so I can only really answer general questions on those titles. For specific questions you’re better checking out the demos outside – and check with the game’s producer [indicates DMC4 producer, Kobayashi-san] out there.

As for Resident Evil 5, all we’ve done is shown the trailer and we’ve been instructed not to say anything more to anybody. Not just you press guys. Anyone; other than it is scheduled for release next year on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

More interesting stuff in there like how/why DMC4 went to 360....

OMG!!! That was hilarious. How could everyone in the company forget that this was confirmed years ago?

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.
