I think Gothic 3 could be better than Oblivion... It's hard to tell, though, as the game is extremely buggy (well, at least some version was; I hear unofficial patches have done a lot). It did seem better IMO, though it had a few drawbacks as well.

I'd wait, Jowood have stated there will both a Gothic 3 collectors box with the expansion and a new Gothic pack containing all three games with expansions (though I think there's only one in the series so far; Night of the Raven which wasn't even published worldwide as far as I know).
I'm eagerly anticipating the expansion myself, having played the original to death... I have heard extremely little of it though, info has been really scarce on that project (in fact; some folks know more about Gothic 4 than the exp for Gothic 3).

Gothic 3 looked really better to me.
