Forums - Gaming Discussion - The News hates us

So I'm watching the news right now (CTV news in Canada), and they've just told us that after the break they're going to bring us the latest news from the E3 conference in LA... Latest news!?  Damnation the mainstream media doesn't care about videogames.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

At least they're still reporting it I suppose...

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

And what was their E3 news?

It's not still. that's just how long it took them to get around to it. They wrapped up the whole E3 in about a minute. They said the top picks were Halo3, Wiifit, rockband, Call of Duty 4, littleBigPlanet and Mass Effect.

I just think it's interesting how much attention they'll devote to film, with indepth reviews of each movie, cast interviews, reports on box office sales etc, etc, but Videogames are completely passed over despite being the larger industry now in $ terms.

At least it's not another story about how video games make kids violent.

To cash in my CC rewards points for $300 in Circuit City gift cards to purchase a 360 or not: That is the question.

I think it is because the largest news demographic is not traditionally interested in games.

But that could all change this generation if the Wii succeeds in its attempts to broaden the markets.

Sadly the game industry isn't as big as you've been led to believe.  The movie industry is still sadly much larger ;)  Although the game industry is pretty big.

Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.

Yeah, the stats on gaming vs. other mediums are always skewed by games companies. They count all games, consoles and accessories, and compare it to JUST box office for movies or JUST CD/MP3 sales for music.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

Yeah the movie industry is set up so that only a few really good movies come out each year, and like, everyone sees them. Whereas, many videogames come out and a small amount of people buy them all.

Well, think about it. Casino Royale made approximately 576 million dollars at Box Office.

Now, it's very unlikely any games could break that unless they sold 10 million copies at $60 a game.

And even if that one game sells a ridiculous amount of copies and changes gaming....

Casino Royale is just one movie. You'll see countless movies making hundreds of millions left and right. Videogames just can't compete.
