Forums - Sales - When the wii stops selling out....

@Grandmaster,

I will definitely give you that the Wii doesn't have as diverse a library as the PS2 (what console does?), but I think you are stretching it a long ways to try and say the PS3 library is more diverse. I think the problem here is that you are lumping all casual games into one category "casual" and then splitting up the hardcore games with RPG, FPS, etc... Really there is a huge breakdown of casual games with all sorts of different types that you marginalize by doing that.

With that said I think the Wii is the only system at the moment with a compelling library for casual gamers. On the plus I happen to enjoy casual games because sometimes I don't have 3 hours to play but maybe only 15 minutes, and its nice to be able to hop on and off that quick. Thats what the "normals" love about those games, they aren't a commitment and they don't have to get deeply involved.

Now with the hardcore games, once again I will agree I don't think the Wii has a full-fledged hardcore game library....yet. But they are coming, you have to remember that back in E3 '06 most people still thought the Wii was going to be just another Gamecube as far as sales were concerned. So now that the 3rd party support has taken notice and they are making games, they will fill that hardcore games void. And 1st party titles are already going to provide a solid start this year before X-mas.

Will they really fill that 'core gamers' void?....

I don't know if it will completely satisfy every "core" gamer, since there are a lot of them that just hate the Wii because they saddled up with a PS3 or 360 early and they won't be cought dead "switching sides" (sad way to think but whatever).  But I consider myself a core gamer as I enjoy pretty much ANY game and have played and beaten games from just about every genre with the exception of possibly some of the stranger Japanese genres.

So yeah, if you have an open mind to the Wii and are willing to give it a shot, I think there is going to be a library there for you.  But like I said in my post above I don't think the Wii is there yet, but I do think it is closer than the PS3.

Grand Theft Auto IV launch.

lol, thats not going to do anything to stem Wii demand, dude. It's just going to help sell 360s and PS3s. I'm pretty sure the people who plan on buying a Wii already know this game  is coming, or don't know because they don't care.

I think the PS3 is doing better with games then the Wii. I think that the PS3 covers a bigger range of genre's then the Wii, and I think it has better games in alot of the genre's that the Wii does good in. Also, there're a few games comming in the next few months as well. Games like Lair, Dynasty Warriors: Gundam, Warhawk, and Madden 08. Seriouly, I I don't get how the Wii's Libray would be more diverse then the PS3's. The Wii is looking like the Gamecube (which is a very promising thing) then it is the PS1, PS2 or SNES. The problem is, the Gamecube really only had games that Nintendo fans would like. I see the same thing with the Wii, only with popular mini-games thrown in. However, I think the PS3 is looking like a smaller PS2 in terms of it's diversity; it's library just isn't as large as the PS2's. I just don't think the Wii is for everyone like the PS2 was...

So the Wii has 21 well-received games on twestern's list, including:
a unique action-RPG,
a legendary action-adventure,
a racing game,
a port of one of the greatest games of this decade,
Pokemon,
a movie license,
Sonic,
an original property,
four sports games, aside from Wii Sports and Wii Play,
two gangster games,
three sequels to DS games,
and two games full of minigames.

The PS3 has 12 mostly well-received games on your list, including:
a legendary fighting game,
a ported legendary Western RPG,
an FPS original property,
a Japanese RPG,
Ninja Gaiden,
a racing game,
two sports games,
Sonic,
a mecha game,
a stealth FPS,
and a gangster game.

I think that the above competing lists indicate that it is in fact the Wii that has a more diverse lineup than the PS3, covering a wider range of genres.  It's true that the Wii has nothing like Virtua Fighter or Oblivion, but then the PS3 has nothing like Zelda or Paper Mario.

As for what's coming down the pipe, I really think that it's not the best move for a PS3 advocate, in 2007 at least.  Mario Galaxy.  Brawl.  Metroid Prime.  NiGHTS.  Umbrella Chronicles.  All in genres the Wii has not exploited yet.

"Wii is just a minigame machine" is a popular misconception that, like many such, does not stand up to even five minutes of honest inquiry.  You do yourself a disservice by simply repeating such falsehoods, let alone trying to justify them.  Yes, the Wii has more minigames than the other consoles.  No, the Wii does not have more minigames than anything else.  Not even remotely close.

I think it's already clear that the Wii does not and will not have the lackluster third-party support the Gamecube did, and in fact NINTENDO's support of the Wii is stronger than it was for the Gamecube.  (i.e. Zelda, Mario, Brawl, Paper Mario, Metroid, all in the first year-and-a-bit; what awesomeness will they give us in the future?)

Extremely excellent post! Don't think I can agree more honestly.

I have to compliment the fact that rather than bashing one console over the other you show the strengths of both and make your point with that. Well done.

To Each Man, Responsibility

For the first time ever, I saw a Wii on the shelf. This past week I saw one lonely Wii on the shelf of my local Walmart. Of course the three gamestops were sold out, but the Wiis are becoming available to impluse buyers. I hope Metroid Prime 3, Galaxy, and Brawl are amazing games. For all the hype they have built this is make it or break it time for Nintendo.

Gotta love how my post that was originally meant to be used as showing the Wii does in fact have a large and good game list for the console age gets turned into an argument about which console has a better list and whatnot. :-p

Personally, I'm glad to see the PS3 list (though not happy to see it measured against the Wii list in an attempt to prove how much better the PS3 is) and it's good to see some of the better games for each console.

-edit-
Also, Sonic should be taken off the PS3 list since we're talking about well recieved games.
