At base level LittleBigPlanet is gaming at its most simple. It’s Mario Bros with physics, set in a 2.5D representation of your idealised childhood. Like someone shrank you down to Sackboy size and chucked you inside the biggest toybox ever conceived. In many ways LBP is the best platform game ever created.

When Media Molecule set out to create LittleBigPlanet, their goal was to make the create mode an entirely more fun and rewarding experience than the actual game itself – and in many ways they have succeeded. The create mode is endlessly fun, and something we fully expect to take over the world.
The logic behind our reasoning? Well, when we first laid our eyes on the create mode we knew that a select hardcore group would eat the feature up with a spoon, and spend hours creating the most intricate, brilliantly designed levels (the beta has proved this to be true already). We also knew that even if others chose not to create, they’d still spend a crazy amount of time downloading the work of those that did. In short, we felt this whole create/share thing would be a bit niche.
But we were wrong – remember those casuals we mentioned at the beginning of this review? The ones that were going gaga for Sackboy? Well, after spending a good few hours playing through the various other Media Molecule based levels, they stumbled upon the create mode – and subsequently spent the next two hours learning and using all the tools at their disposal to create their own functioning level. “It’s like the Sims” they claimed before shooing us away so they could focus on their masterpiece.
Our minds were blown – and this whole scene reinforced our belief that LittleBigPlanet has an overwhelming potential for crossover.
