I wish people would stop using EGM and it's affiliates as references. They have bad taste, have no ethics, and write horribly.
Notice the PS2 waggle thread, that is EGM's fault.
I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

Do I buy games based on sales...
Yes, I do. That's why I am Pokemon's number one fan. ;)
Just kidding BTW.

Steven,
Oh I agree with you mate. I use to read EGM regularly growing up, but I do so much less often these days. Obviously the advent of the internet has changed many things, especially gaming magazines, but it would be wrong to take away things that the magazine has done.
For instance, no EGM, no Akuma in Street Fighter. That's pretty significant in the gaming world.
But I also agree with you about the bad taste, no ethics, and terrible "journalism." Sensationalism can sell, and EGM is overtly asking their consumers for all the help they can get in the magazine these days. That's how bad things are for them.
The reason I used them as a reference though, is that they are a more established, not necessarily good, name in video games and when they put out a top 100 list of the best of games it's worth noting. So in making my point about the fact that Saturn has some stellar games, I think it's more sound to source a several year old EGM article, as opposed to SEGAfanboy.com.

I agree with the last part, they aren't the worst source. EGM has a false image though among some gamers. I don't think EGM gets it.
You don't have to ask the fans. Print unbiased news and reviews, hype things that genuinely interest the editors instead of hyping big advertisers, and rumors with some base in reality from realiable insider connections.
Most print mags suck now. The only ones with any value have do decent editorials and interviews. GI was really bad, but they have been doing better with some good score card articles, where they pretty fairly judged them selves on predictions, reviews/previews, and so on. The latest issue actually had an apology for overhyping a game that ended up sucking. Now if only they would actually be more careful in the first place. (I would give a page number and the game, but I don't have it with me. I am at work.)

Judging by the nature of this site, I would say that 70% of the people here judge things based on sales. For example, before the DS took off many people considered the PSP to be a great system; however when the DS started blowing up the sales charts all of a sudden the PSP is crap, it's just ports, ect.
To aswer your question, no, I don't care care about sales at all. I prefer the N64 over the PS1, The gamecube over the PS2, and the PS3 over the Wii. Sales do not tell what console offers gaming at it's best...
