I agree with the last part, they aren't the worst source. EGM has a false image though among some gamers. I don't think EGM gets it.

You don't have to ask the fans. Print unbiased news and reviews, hype things that genuinely interest the editors instead of hyping big advertisers, and rumors with some base in reality from realiable insider connections.

Most print mags suck now. The only ones with any value have do decent editorials and interviews. GI was really bad, but they have been doing better with some good score card articles, where they pretty fairly judged them selves on predictions, reviews/previews, and so on. The latest issue actually had an apology for overhyping a game that ended up sucking. Now if only they would actually be more careful in the first place. (I would give a page number and the game, but I don't have it with me. I am at work.)
