Forums - Nintendo - If it weren't for Wii, I wouldn't own a console this gen.

If Nintendo had tried to release a Cube360, I would have yawned and done without.  PC would have been more than enough. Am I alone on this?

I mean, 6th gen was boring enough with all the cinematic games, but console players seem to still be enamored with the FPS, a genre that has been well explored and done to death on PC.  Think about it, they're just now discovering online gaming with Halo 2 or Halo 3. Much like country music, they're 15 years behind the rest of the industry.  Online deathmatch? Doom, 1993.  Team based tactical gaming? Tribes, 1998.  It's an old, old genre.

From reading countless forums - especially VGC, one thing I've noticed about Wii gamers is that they're not new to gaming.  They're old pros, and the stats back this up (only 10% of owners are expanded market)  I also have another suspicion - Wii owners are likely to be PC gamers.  Am I right?

When you spend a big chunk of your time playing MMO's, or competitive FPS/RTS, it's a nice change to play Wii, especially with friends and family.  And as PC gamers we're not prone to buzzwords like "HD" since we played Dark Forces in HD back in 1995.  Also, Crysis kind of makes you jaded to any console attempts at realism.

We're exactly the kind of people Nintendo was targeting.  People growing older, getting tired of FMV-laden "cinematic" gaming, wishing for a new experience.  We're why Nintendo was predicting a downturn in gaming, and they had to do something to keep our interest.

Judging from sales of traditional consoles, Nintendo was right.

PC + Wii owners unite.  Our last-gen dying platforms have access to nearly every 90+ rated game this gen.  Building a PC that visually outperforms PS360 is cheap and easy.    Oct 7th 2010 predictions (made Dec 17th '08)
PC: 10^9
Wii: 10^8

but... I like FPS.... *crys*

I do too! I still love platforming, another old genre. I just think it's funny that console gamers are amazed by online FPS.

Wii realized the strengths of a console, while the others tried to imitate a PC.  So as a PC gamer, they really don't offer anything.

I don't play 360 for FPS. I dislike FPS. So far I mostly play geometry wars 1 :P
Wii isn't as fun due to worse graphics, online, scope of worlds (I love exploring, and HD games give me a chance to do that) and (imo) controls.

This generation has had so much variety on all the consoles, I don't know what you are complaining about.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

frybread (aka sad, sad wiimote outfit guy)wrote this? whoa! it must be snowing!

Even if they made a wii60, you would have missed out on all those massive games.

Man, you make HD gaming sound boring. Silly, it's not all just about FPS. There are still companies out there that are dedicated to bring out new experiences on the table. Think about Mirror's Edge (considered as a first-person platformer game), or think about Little Big Planet, etc. HD console gaming isn't bad, you simply can't notice that this generation is probably the best one yet. Digital distribution is at it's best, and great games come out of this service (see Braid, World of Goo, Castle Crashers, Super Stardust HD, etc.).

There is also this phenomenon called ''bringing back very old franchises to the gaming world of today'' that we're mostly seeing from Capcom (and Konami). Bionic Commando Rearmed (though a remake of a old NES game) never looked as good and was never as fun as today, same goes for R-Type Dimensions very soon. A new 3D version is even coming out! They're even talking about bringing Strider back for a new generation of gamers to experience the greatness that it once was, but in a different style. This generation really is great you know, for both HD gamers and ''old school'' ones.

I have to admit though, after reading your post twice, I still don't get what you have against country music! o_O

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

What was that about a downturn in interest by the way, the VG industry has been growing better than the porn industry.

Seems like a lot of subtle trolling, but i'll just regard this as a defense against the might of the ps360. :P

@theprof00 so he trolled his own thread?

Also we did this before, go search for yourself it's on VGC, the video game industry shrank if you apply only the consoles (no handhelds) and exclude the GC and Wii respectively. Over the same period of time. =) I believe the number was either 22 or 9% there was a lot of stuff going on in that read so I forget.

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

The Hunt Begins 4/20/2010 =D

That 10% was earlier in the life of the Wii, when it was really hard to get a hold of a Wii and the casualz wouldn't have bothered lining up in the Wee hours of the morning to get one. I would imagine it's higher by now.

I think you have a point, but you're forgetting a third group. Those of us who loved our GC, our N64, our SNES, and our NES because of the excellent 1st party games

Not that I had a NES (too young) or a 64 - my parents didn't see the point of getting a new console when I already had a SNES *tear*
