Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony with momemtum: Reasons

Lately Sony has been coming strong. Reasons:

First for a while now they unveiled a big troika of games. Uncharted, Ratchet, and Heavenly Sword. Now, none of these games themselves really totally blow away 360 graphics, but they were all pretty top tier graphical titles.

Then the big dollop, Killzone 2, was added. The one game that in my opinion is head and shoulders above anything on 360 (not that 360 COULDNT do Killzone, I believe it could).

The contrast of reliable hardware to 360's defects plays to Sony's favor obviously.

The drop to $499 appears to have stimulated moribound sales of the system, and shown their may actually be life in PS3.

Also, Blu Ray has really been coming on strong in the HDDVD-Blu Ray format wars, and as the PS3 price drops has become increasingly compelling.

HOWEVER

I still dont think PS3 can beat 360 in North America. 360 is just too well rounded. Personally I can only imagine PS3 as a second console. I dont think it's online is good enough. You dont get flawless online play and everybody with mic's as you do on Live. You dont get the ease of MS service, the library of Arcade titles, demos, and videos on XBL easily trounces Sony. Morever, 360 seems to get far more/newer demos of third party games than PSN from what I can see. Not too mention movies. Also, 360 just has too much price advantage that will continue in the future, as a 360 price drop is near. Finally, MS game library with Halo 3 and Mass Effect is too strong in the short term. What I think MS needs to focus more on though, is ambitious (especially graphically) first party titles that really push the system...

I don't think you can say that yet. In two or three weeks, maybe.

Momentum = mass x velocity

Sony has increased its velocity, but has yet to reach any critical mass. It is also fair to say that neither MS nor Nintendo has let off the gas on their systems either. One could just as well look selectively at their situations and come to the conclusion that they are picking up momentum as well.

Sony's fate won't be much clearer until:

1) We see how long the 60gigs last.
2) We see how long the sales uptick lasts.
3) We see how good its games and the games of the competition actually are.
4) We see how the 80G hits the market and if it has a price drop before Xmas.
5) We see if or when MS drops its price, and how the market responds.
6) We see if Halo 3 moves consoles.
7) We whether GTA PS2 owners put down money for the 360, PS3 or just take a pass.
8) We see if Nintendo has enough supply for the holidays, and if not, if there is any defection to the 360 or PS3.
9) We see how the 360s extended warrantee and the new Falcon design increases consumer confidence.
10) I can't think of 10, but it doesn't feel right stopping at 9.

The good news for everyone is that most or all of these questions will be answered by January. That's what makes the 2007 holiday so damned important.

It's core gamer momentum which could let PS3 beat out 360 for awhile -- especially since 360 has done jack all lately -- but it won't affect the Wii too much.

I like how the thread title says "Sony does have momentum" - then you debunk it in your first post...

No question they have "more" momentum than say, a month or two ago - but that doesn't mean anything yet. I still think a 360 price cut is coming - at the most opportune time for MS (i.e. last October/early Nov), and that the Wii > 360 > PS3 for NA this Xmas.

The real battle/results will start to become apparent early next year. Sony will need to drive unit sales during the year - not just at Xmas.

Well the did boost sales with very few retail games. Not many gamers know about games like Super StarDust HD on the PS Store

I don't think many people buy a console for "This game that's eventually gonna come out." Announced titles only boost people's eventual purchases.

Did the price shuffle help? Looking at the numbers, it did. Nothing magnificent, but the PS3 jumped ahead of the 360 in sales this week (did the 360 really only sell 60k consoles?) We'll see how long this lasts. It could be starting to punch holes in the 360, who knows.

The word is spelled "you're". Pot, kettle, black.

Really now? The charts seem to suggest that no, there is not a boost in sales after ANY E3. The only significant boost in sales shows to be the Christmas season.

Killzone cant be done on the 360 simply for that fact that it doesnt fit in the format disc the 360 uses, if one level takes 2 gigs of data, it is to much, but another reason why killzone cant be done on the 360 I cannot find unless I see final gameplay footage.
