Forums - Sales - 360 v PS3 gap charts updated for end of Sept 08

so stable in america, a turn in japan (speculated to be temproary) losses in others, and gains in lead overall... but the overall is what matters if ps3 is going to over run the 360 and 5+ mil is a tough one to do

it would be interesting to see this again after december, could you mark this thread and up date it then kowenicki

good infomation, thanks for getting the graphs they are very interesting.
Easier to understand and take in compared to writiing.

looks like 360 is going to have a lead over the PS3 longer than we thought. Everything hhas changed since last month. Despite all this i still believe that the PS3 will outsell the 360 this holiday becasue of some of the exclusives and Blu-ray player demand.

So basically since Nov 06 Sony has made no headway at all into 360 WW numbers. At what point do we believe the 360 wont come second?

Dude, I love these charts you do. It's nothing we dont already know, but it's so nice to visually see it.

despite big releases I sitll feel this is not the winter of blueray, nxt winter will be with the digital braodcast rollover which will cause a spike in demand of hd tvs coupled with low prices of both... and in winter 09 if blue ray is doing well, we will see the first blueray only big movie. that is the key commitment to the idea and format, not that this will be a bad year for it, this winter should be dvds last real hura as the major standalone format, after that it will be  a mercky few years where dvd wins in sale volume with diminishing returnens and a lower revenu stream until it is gone

In concrete figures, units sold to retail worldwide (no estimates):

360's Lead (in millions)
Sep-05 0.00
Dec-05 1.50 (360's one year or more headstart in North America, Europe, Japan, etc)
Mar-06 3.20
Jun-06 5.00
Sep-06 6.00
Dec-06 8.72 (the biggest gap in sales)
Mar-07 7.29 (PS3 launch in PAL regions)
Jun-07 7.28
Sep-07 7.77
Dec-07 7.17
Mar-08 6.15
Jun-08 5.89 (the lowest recorded gap since the PS3's launch)

* For the period June 2008 to September 2008, it seems the gap has become smaller yet again. The PS3 is still set to launch officially in some regions including South America.

A graph taking into account entry pricing developments, important exclusives (like Halo 3 and MGS 4) and regions launches would be interesting.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

Hmm... Overall numbers lead are back to where they were when the PS3 launched, so all looks good for the 360 so far and it has done alright maintaining the price-cuts especially when going near the hoidays as many people hold out their phurchases for Christmas.

End of '08 predictions (made by theprof00): PS3: 20m, 360: 23.5m, wii: 42m

Now Playin':  PS3|Resistance 2, LBP, Uncharted and Fifa 09, PSP| Ratchet and Clank: Size matters, 360| Gears of war 2 and Fallout 3.

Graph based on the above data:

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

Sorry, where are these figures from?  Im using VGChartz data only....    Also quoting selective months doesnt illustrate trends like a line graph can (and even this isnt perfect for trends).

Company financial reports. Units sold to retail.
