Genuine scares would be from in order:

1.Condemned
2.RERemake
3.Fear
4.SH2
5.Condemned 2

Resi 4 did not scare me at all. It lost it's entire potency. That game is overated.

Silent Hill (1-3) - Unmatched Creepiness, and damn near helpless protagonists

Resident Evil 1(PS1)/ Resident Evil (GC): This game set the standard, and had legit scares. Zombie dogs + window = biggest "Oh Shit!" moment ever

Condemned (360): Just getting around to playing this, but the scares are great! There's always a feeling something is off screen, and ready to pounce. I bought part 2, but I haven't tried it yet

Yo Mama!: She's pretty scary but I love playing with her

Nothing beats Silent Hill, they don't have the "boo!" but they have some kind of subtle horror that gets inside you. 2 classical examples:

The Mirror Room from SH3

The Mannequin, from SH3

Condemned, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Thief 3, Phantasmagoria, the 11th Hour, 7th Guest, Area 51 (Tex Murphy), Tomb Raider (great atmosphere), Silent Hill 2, Forbidden Siren, Turok, Thief 1 (the ghosts).

The first Resident Evil game because I was five and I watched my cousin play it.

For me the scariest games ever are:

Resident evil 1 : (the dog that crashes from the window made me jump from my chair for the first time ever)

Silent hill 1 : Whenever the city transforms, you're garenteed to get scared, plus the small black crying child in the school made me shut down the console and go to sleep)

Silent hill 3: The room with the big mirror, i left the heroine standing their by mistake cause my mom called for me, but when i returned,, i found that the reflection of the room was transforming, and that the reflection of the heroine kept standing there and stared at me :( , even now i'm getting the shivers :)

Fatal frame 2 & 3: Where do i start? japanese horror is the scariest, impalements, ceremonies, rituals, long haired girls :(,,, by the way the apartment of the heroine in the 3rd game is even scarier than the haunted mansions

Currently Playing: Final Fantasy XIII (PS3), White Knight Chronicles (PS3), PES 2010 (PS3), Killzone 2 (PS3)

Games to Finish: Silent hill Homecoming (PS3), Valkyria Chronicles (PS3), Oblivion (PS3)

This is why I pick Condemned:

Uncharted....

because I avoid all horror games like the plague

I'm guessing a few people will scoff at the suggestion of Uncharted, but as a person who greatly dislikes horror games, but has played alot just to see what the fuss is about, I really disliked that aspect of Uncharted. So Un-necessary and whilst it wasn't up there with games like SH3, RE1 and FEAR, it was "jumpy" scary because you didn't really expect it (even though it's a huge cliche).

SPOILERS AHOY!:
The bit immediately after the projector plays in the dark room was quite scary because after playing the game for so long against humans, playing against those cursed creatures was quite a spook. Add on top of that the fact that most wouldn't have blind fired at all throughout the game, it took me about 3 minutes of running into space, aiming and shooting a few bullets and running again before I even thought of running and gunning. So it made you feel hopeless, which is pretty good horror-wise.

My personal favourites are SH3 and Eternal Darkness. Whilst RE and Condemned will always have their place for the jumpy type horror (dog jumping out of window in RE 1), SH3 and ED messed with the mind, which I consider far scarier and much harder to pull off.

Any thing that ends in a "z" scares me!
