If you cared to look at hardware from launch chart on this site you would see that the ps3 is tracking very closely to the ps2 at this point in their lifecycle. It is within close reach of PS2's sales.

Oh I have, what you fail to realize is that the ps2 had a staggered launch, look at hardward from launch> ps2 vs ps3 japan, then america, then others, then europe. You will get a very different picture.
Let me make it easier for you, these are numbers for both the ps2 and ps3 being out in each territory for just under 2 years.
Japan
PS2 - 7.7 million
PS3 - 2.4 Million
America
PS2 - 12.4 million
PS3 - 6 million
Total Others (not two years but I will give numbers of what the ps2 did in the time the ps3 has been out)
PS2 - 10 million
PS3 - 7.3 million
Overall -
PS2 - 30.1 million
PS3 - 15.7 million

Thanks for beating me to posting the truth. It takes a crazy fanboy to assume that the PS2 and PS3 are anywhere near eachother in terms of sales.
Compare 2008 with the Playstation 3, to 2002 for the Playstation 2:
Playstation 2: 20.4 million units sold by EOY. 10.5 million units by Oct. 5th.
Playstation 3: 6.6 million units by Oct. 4th.
Now, here's the question for the Sony fans out there: How in Gods name is the Playstation 3 going to sell 10-14 million more units by the EOY? If the Playstation 3 had a snowball's chance on getting anywhere near PS2 numbers, it has to start at some time. When is that going to happen? 08? 09? 10? 11? The PS3 is still in 3rd place.
And if you still think the Playstation 3 is going to get anywhere near PS2 type numbers (which, for the record, has sold another 4.5 million units this year, 8 years into it's lifespan), then what's the Wii going to sell? Half a billion?
